Remora is hiring a Thermal Systems Manager to lead our development of the thermal management system of the Remora mobile carbon capture device from concept through production. The Thermal Systems Manager will aid in the development of the device thermal architectures through architecture analysis, requirement generation, component development, component sourcing, and systems testing, all while helping to tackle the defining challenge of our time. We’re a 50-person climate tech startup based in Detroit, MI. We build a device that captures a semi-truck’s carbon emissions directly from the tailpipe. We sell the CO2 to end-users, and split that revenue with our customers, so our device pays for itself in just a couple years. We’re piloting our technology with some of the largest companies in the world, including three of the Fortune 10, and we’ve raised multiple rounds of funding from leading investors like Lowercarbon Capital, Union Square Ventures, and First Round Capital.
Responsibilities:
Develop design concepts through 1D simulation and other techniques, and identify potential architectures and appropriately sized components of thermal management system
Develop thermal component and thermal subsystem requirements
Identify thermal components and suppliers that meet design requirements, procurement timing, and cost constraints
Design or direct thermal system packaging via 3D CAD software
Develop test cases for thermal test bench and conduct tests to evaluate component performance and thermal architecture efficiency
Incorporate leading edge technology from automotive thermal system innovations and make thoughtful decisions and recommendations based on findings
Lead design reviews, pre-production verification and validation, and production design release
Support or direct thermal system control calibration
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 4+ years of relevant work experience OR 6+ years of relevant work experience, particularly in thermal management of automotive powertrain or power electronics systems
Proficiency in 1D thermal modeling and 3D CFD modeling
Extensive knowledge of thermal management strategies including heat exchangers, air coolers, radiators, coolant and refrigerant systems, etc.
Experience generating technical drawings following GD&T standards
Demonstrated ability to maintain prototype/production level drawings and bills of materials, conduct D/PFMEA, lead root cause analysis and issue tracking, lead DVP&R, and support PPAP
Familiarity with SAE Standards is preferred
Working knowledge of precision injection molding and mold design, precision forming, heat exchanger building and controlled atmosphere brazing is an asset

Climate change disproportionately impacts communities of color, so we’re looking for candidates deeply committed to reducing emissions and to racial justice. We especially encourage people of color, women, and members of other communities historically excluded in startups to apply. Research shows that women and people of color are less likely to think they are qualified for a position after reading a list of requirements like the one above. If you are worried that you are not qualified, please apply anyway! We’re most excited to work with people who learn quickly and want to tackle the climate crisis.
