Job Description

COVID-19 Pandemic

Please note that all PSR National staff are generally working remotely, but our DC-based staff are expected to be available to work at times on-site at our national office when it is deemed necessary, provided that public health officials have deemed it safe to do so. For this position, preference will be given to applicants who currently reside in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and who are willing to consider occasional work at our office (again, assuming that public health officials have deemed it safe to do so). We are, however, open to the possibility of 100% remote for the right candidate.

To center the safety and well-being of its staff, PSR requires that any employee who is required to conduct in-person activities for their job must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Accommodations may be sought and approved in accordance with the law by contacting human resources at employment@psr.org.

The Position

The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the PSR development team, including delegation of responsibilities among the team, promotion of efficient communication within the team, and recruitment, training, mentoring, and retention of staff. Together with PSR’s Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Director of Philanthropy develops our short- and long-range fundraising strategies and works with the Executive Director to produce and implement an annual development plan. The Director of Philanthropy currently supervises a staff of one other individual, the Direct Mail and Membership Manager.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Works closely with the Executive Director and key staff to create solicitations (direct mail, online) to increase donor acquisition and retention
  • Identifies and builds relationships with funding prospects, and maintains relationships with current donors, including frequent communication and outreach on PSR activities, priorities, and developments
  • Oversees the writing and editing of all solicitation communications
  • Together with the Director of Operations, prepares and manages our fundraising budget
  • Manages our planned giving program
  • In collaboration with program communications staff, devises and implements outreach strategies for current and prospective donors regarding PSR events and publications to ensure maximum fundraising impact
  • Compiles fundraising reports/presentations for board meetings
  • All staff at PSR are expected to participate in our ongoing work to improve diversity, equity, inclusion and justice within our organization and in the fields in which we work

As the leader of our development team, the Director of Philanthropy needs to be able to conceptualize, plan, and implement a programmatic approach to building relationships and securing philanthropic support — including setting ambitious goals, developing strategies for prospects, prioritizing activities, asking for gifts, and coordinating the involvement, as needed, of staff, board members and other volunteers.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • 5+ years’ experience in non-profit/association fundraising
  • Experience managing an annual giving campaign
  • Excellent verbal presentation and written communication skills
  • Team management experience
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with various constituencies, including immediate team members, chapter leaders, donors, foundation staff, and Board members
  • Stellar organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to clearly communicate objectives, tasks, and timelines
  • Experience and knowledge of our issue areas is useful — but more important is a positive attitude and a passion for what we do

Strongly Preferred

  • Major gift fundraising experience
  • Direct mail experience
  • Experience in CRM and donor databases
  • Experience with planned giving

Preferred

  • Senior level management experience
  • Budget management experience
  • Knowledge of key academic, business, foundation, and/or community leaders in the areas in which we work (climate change and nuclear disarmament)
  • Experience in event planning
  • Experience cultivating younger donors
  • Experience/knowledge of latest practices regarding online giving

Terms

  • This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend hours required
  • Reports to the Executive Director
