Bright Power has been a transformative player in clean energy and sustainable buildings since 2004. We believe a meaningful difference in climate change will only be realized if it is easy for building owners to make their buildings better.

Our approach is simple: we find energy and water problems in buildings, we fix them, and we follow up to make sure the solutions worked. Behind the scenes, our unique combination of software, analytics, engineering, and contracting makes it all happen. If you have a can-do problem-solving attitude and are excited to join a company of the brightest minds working on energy and water in buildings, then apply to join our team!

Join Us

Bright Power is comprised of a team of diverse, talented, and hard-working individuals committed to growing this industry and making a positive impact on the environment. We are passionate about reducing energy and water usage by implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. Our goal is to improve the health, comfort, and value of our client’s buildings, while cultivating a sustainable future. We believe deeply in doing well by doing good and come to work every day seeking to change the world.

The Role

Bright Power is seeking an experienced senior energy engineer to work on the leading edge of the deployment of distributed energy resources into multifamily buildings that is essential to the systemic change required for California to meet its zero carbon mandates. Furthermore, this role champions equity in electrification: an increasing share of our work is focused on bringing electrification to low-income affordable housing.

The candidate should be very self-motivated, enjoy working with and designing systems, adapt quickly to new technologies, and get a kick out of finding energy savings and electrification opportunities in the world around them. The candidate will be part of a rapidly growing San Francisco Bay Area office, serving our clients who own and manage multifamily properties in California.

Primary tasks:

  • Act as a technical leader, identify and prioritize technical challenges and communicate about them appropriately to real-estate, engineering, and construction audiences.
  • Evaluate new technologies related to electrification and decarbonization -- especially heat pump water heaters -- but also batteries, EV Charging, pumps, controls, and more.
  • Work closely with manufacturer sales reps, distributors, and application engineers to ensure system design and components match the design intent.
  • Design data monitoring and controls for complex systems and analyze operational results.
  • Support project managers with design, specifications, bids, and construction including on-site visits
  • Support energy auditors with project scoping and savings estimation
  • Develop project scopes for the most complex & challenging projects
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of template specifications and drawings for technologies including boilers, heat pump, and VFDs
  • Review project scopes, sizing, and drawings by 3rd party engineers of record
  • Present at conferences, client lunch & learns, and internal technical trainings
  • Represent Bright Power in statewide, utility, and local electrification community
  • Troubleshoot problems using systems thinking and deductive reasoning
  • Act as technical interface with Senior Engineers in Bright Power’s other regions
  • Management responsibilities include immediate dotted line responsibility for acting as mentor to team of 10 engineers and project managers and working with technical fellows on special short term projects. In longer term, there is the possibility of direct reports.

Ideal candidate should have:

  • Experience assessing energy- and water-related systems commonly found in multifamily buildings.
  • High proficiency in Excel and excellent computer skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Team-oriented approach, with an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Creative problem-solving ability.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • At least 5+ years of experience in building operations, design, construction, energy, sustainability, or related field.
  • Experience with heat pump water heater design, manufacturing, or construction
  • Existing relationships with California real estate professionals, service contractors, utility program implementers, product vendors, energy/water efficiency or renewable professionals, etc.
  • Experience with multifamily building types and associated mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with California building code and energy code.
  • Experience with California’s energy & water incentive programs.
  • Ability to calculate energy savings using industry-standard formulas.
  • Active participation in professional industry associations.

Bright Power’s California office focuses in the following technologies:

  • Domestic Hot Water (heat pump water heaters, condensing boilers, recirculation pumps)
  • Heating and Cooling (hydronic boilers, steam boilers, heat pumps, controls)
  • Ventilation systems (central ventilation systems, VFDs, controls)
  • Lighting Systems (LED retrofit technology)
  • Electrical Systems (motors, controls)
  • Distributed Energy Resources / Renewable Energy (solar PV, energy storage, Electric Vehicle Charging)
  • Remote Monitoring
  • Hourly data analysis, energy modeling, utility rate analysis
  • Building Electrification & Decarbonization (fuel switching, load shifting, demand response)
