Job Description

WHO YOU ARE

Sila Nanotechnologies is seeking a hands-on, team-oriented electrochemist with an aptitude for learning new things and a desire to innovate lithium-ion battery technologies. This position will focus on using your deep knowledge of lithium-ion electrochemistry to optimize the performance of our materials in next generation batteries. You will be working cross-functionally with materials scientists, process engineers, applications engineers, and technicians, so mental flexibility and collaborative problem-solving abilities are required. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive range of technical know-how, a versatile cooperative skill set, and a resilient passion to bring our technology to market.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Develop next-generation cells made with Sila material by leveraging your expertise in electrochemistry and materials science of lithium-ion technologies
  • Mentor scientists and engineers by sharing electrochemical knowledge, guiding experimental planning, and developing them to have a deep understanding and ownership of projects
  • Work independently to direct projects, effectively prioritize experiments, troubleshoot problems, and drive results to completion
  • Proactively invest in our company values and vision and champion them as we grow
  • Effectively communicate ideas and results internally across diverse Sila teams to collaboratively accomplish cross-functional goals
  • Develop characterization techniques to determine structure-function relationships and improve electrochemical performance at the material, electrode and cell level

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Expertise in various cell analytical techniques, including voltammetry, EIS, rate, cycle life, high and low temperature performance, DCR, dVdQ, and post-mortem analysis to characterize and improve battery performance
  • Comfortable with ambiguity; finds joy in figuring out what needs to be done—and then doing it
  • Exceptional experimentation and product development skills paired with an analytical ability to evaluate from first-principles understanding
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and improve upon them
  • Holistic and practical approach to problem solving, driven by curiosity and attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering (Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemistry preferred)
  • 10+ years of work experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree)
  • Knowledge of chemistry, materials science and related methods for materials morphological, textural and microstructural characterization is a plus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a daily basis
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • Reach low shelves or items on the floor
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc in a fixed location
