Job Description

About Crowdsourcing Sustainability

Crowdsourcing Sustainability is a startup 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We’re on a mission to help reverse global warming as quickly and equitably as possible by inspiring and empowering people around the world to make the places they live and work climate positive.

We’re doing this through our three main programs:

  • CS Newsletter: regularly informing minds, touching hearts, and inspiring action. Reaches 200,000+ people in 150+ countries.
  • CS Podcast: disseminating the wisdom of sustainability experts, lifting up the work they’re doing, and empowering listeners to accelerate climate action. In the top 15% of podcasts globally.
  • CS Community: providing opportunities via slack, the climate action directory, and community meetings for people to connect, share stories, best practices, and generally help each other to level up impact on their climate journeys.

Our Purpose: To help save and improve as many lives as we can by working to reverse global warming as quickly and equitably as possible.

We’re helping to build the climate movement’s power by strengthening existing climate champions, bringing new ones on board, and accelerating cultural change.

Our team is made up of 3 fantastic part-time interns and myself right now.

We’re always asking the questions: "How can we help to reverse global heating as quickly and equitably as possible? How can we better inspire/empower/connect people to level up their impact? How can we grow the community?" So when you have ideas for improvements or projects to those ends, please do share :)

We’re looking for a teammate whose overarching mission will be to:

  • Maximize connection and strengthen relationships within the Crowdsourcing Sustainability community.
  • Empower the CS community to maximize our collective impact.

Key Info

You’ll be the second full-time teammate at a nimble startup. I (hi, Ryan here 👋) have been building this organization around the newsletter for the last four years. I’m looking for a partner to help unleash the power of our amazing community - someone who is a self-starter as you’ll be co-creating this role with me as we go!

To be successful at this, we’re looking for a teammate who:

  • Is passionate about the CS mission and naturally aligned with our core values.
  • Is a natural people-person and relationship builder.
  • Has high Emotional Intelligence.
  • Can bring out the best in people, guide them on their climate journeys, and mobilize them.
  • Skilled at match-making - connecting people with each other for a mutually beneficial relationship.
  • Has strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Has 3+ years experience as a community manager or a related role (preferred, not required…apply anyway if you think you can crush this!).
  • Takes initiative and gets things done.
  • Can wear multiple hats - lots to do at a startup with 2 full-time employees!
  • Has an entrepreneurial spirit - is ready to be in a strategic, partner-like relationship with the Founder.
  • Is knowledgeable about and has connections in the climate and sustainability space.
  • Loves this Crowdsourcing Sustainability Manifesto and wants to help bring it to life!

Role:

  • Organizing and facilitating community meetings, events, webinars, etc. (perspective: 400+ people registered for our last webinar.)
  • Constantly communicating with and helping the CS community (via slack, email, phone/video, etc.) This includes handling most inbound (e.g. lots of people share what they’re working on→thank them & help them plug into CS).
  • Connecting the CS community and strengthening relationships as much as possible (the CS Climate Action Directory is one tool for this).
  • Welcoming people to Slack, sparking engagement, and making it more useful for people (600+ people in slack right now).
  • Creating, designing, and leading beneficial community projects and partnerships.
  • Managing interns or volunteers from the community (if you choose to/believe it'd be beneficial).
  • Leading community-oriented fundraising efforts.

Early Project Ideas:

  • Have 100 conversations with people in the community to understand where they are in their climate journey, how we can better serve them, and to collect their stories of sustainability wins (and learn if and how CS helped in any way).
  • Community Storytelling: collect and share stories from people in the community. A lot of amazing people are doing a lot of impactful work. Let's celebrate them and share their strategies to replicate success.

Details:

  • Full-time position, Flexible hours.
  • Virtual.
  • Salary $65,000 (same as me, the Executive Director, no additional benefits at this time but planning to improve next year).
  • Paid time off: Option to take every other Friday off! I want you to do whatever you need to take care of yourself and be energized at work really. So whatever the right balance is for you.
  • You will be the second full-time employee and will technically report to the Executive Director, but I am really looking for a partnership.

Crowdsourcing Sustainability’s Core Values

Compassion

  • For ourselves and each other.
  • For people in the CS community.
  • For all life on earth.

Courage

It won’t always be easy, but it’s critical to...

  • Be honest. Be yourself. Say what you need to say.
  • Do the right thing.
  • Tell the truth about where we stand & what we need to do (both within the org and with the community).

Growth Mindset

  • Always keep learning, reflecting, and making adjustments to improve both personally and professionally. This leads to strengthening our relationships and continually increasing our impact.
  • Focus on the right things (those that are in our control), taking one step at a time.

Teamwork

  • We’re all on the same team - team life. Solidarity, communication, and collaboration are key.
  • This extends to our community as well. No matter who someone is or where they’re from, they have something valuable to contribute. We’re stronger together.

Commitment to saving and improving lives

  • We intend for every decision, investment, and action to be in service of our vision of empowering people to rebuild a safer, healthier, and more just world.

Why this role matters & what success will look like

The Community Weaver is a critically important role because it is with and through our community that Crowdsourcing Sustainability is making a positive impact in the world. To continue empowering people on their climate journeys and maximizing our collective impact, we need someone to nurture this wonderful, fledgling ecosystem full-time and focus on strengthening the relationships within it.

Success looks like people in the community constantly making new and beneficial connections with each other and helping each other out on their climate journeys and projects. It’ll look like regularly sharing success stories from within the community and sustaining an ongoing dialogue with the community to understand where people are, what their needs are, and what they’re getting stuck on so we can know how best to help them. It looks like a lot of one-on-one conversations, activity and engagement in slack, community events, meetings, webinars, documentary screenings, and more. It looks like new collaborations and projects growing from the healthy soil of this community.

Ultimately this work will increase our positive impact significantly. More people empowered and collaborating means more people eliminating more and more emissions and deadly pollution - aka saving and improving more and more lives!

Quite frankly, I'm looking for someone who's passionate about climate, is excited about (and capable of crushing) this role, and someone who I will love to work with.

If you think that might be you, please do apply with a cover letter - can’t wait to hear from you!
