Laboratory Supervisor

FULL-TIME PERMANENT POSITION

OVERVIEW

Terramera is actively seeking an experienced Laboratory Supervisor responsible for managing and organizing the day-to-day operations at our state-of-art Research & Development labs across Biology and Chemistry groups. Equipped with a strong technical aptitude and systemic mindset, the successful candidate is adept in maintaining high health & safety standards and improving the lab operations processes.

This position will establish you as a mission-critical member to achieving Terramera's mission in reducing synthetic pesticides in agriculture, so we can grow more affordable, clean food for everyone, globally. 

Terramera’s advanced research labs combine formulation chemistry with in vitro and in planta bioassays to develop high-performance products. More specifically, these labs make use of automated liquid and plant handlers and imaging microplate reader, paired with high-throughput screening processes established for plant pathology, entomology, and weed science.

YOUR MISSION

To implement, maintain and optimize complex lab management system and processes to ensure all research labs are performing at optimal state.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reporting to the R&D Operations Manager, the Laboratory Supervisor works closely with management and scientists to design, implement, enforce, and maintain processes and systems (Lab Operations Plan) for optimal productivity. The Lab Supervisor will also interact with Facilities management for improvements in the overall laboratory environment and working conditions, and the Health and Safety Committee to monitor and improve safety standards.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of Lab Operation procedures, including documentation and communication across the organization
• Oversee the correct and best usage of lab space in coordination with researchers and facilities team
• Champion the Health & Safety framework, which includes polices and standards, and ensures they are adhered to without any compromises
• Maintain training records for all laboratory staff
• Support the laboratory budgeting process
• Devise and implement new processes and tools
• Lab procurement, including ordering lab services, materials and supplies, processes invoices and provide purchase status update
• Manage material and supplies shipping and receiving activities in proper compliance with technical and safety standards
• Ensure that supplies and materials inventory are sufficiently stocked and ready for use, e.g., sterilized, for scientists as necessary
• Coordinate the execution of the waste management tasks and waste pick-up calendar
• Oversee maintenance and troubleshooting of various lab instrumentation, ensuring sophisticated equipment operates at optimal functionality by performing routine inspection and following the equipment maintenance plan
• Manage execution of both scheduled (preventative) and ad-hoc maintenance of laboratory equipment by aligning with both scientists and external vendors
• Monitor cold storage equipment, incubators, and alert the researchers of any issue identified
• Support new lab equipment acquisition
• Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job

REQUIREMENTS

• Post-secondary education in Biology, Biochemistry, Engineering, or related field.
• 2+ years of relevant lab management experience in large, complex environments (academia, industry, or government), preferring working with state-of-art equipment and tools
• Matured experience in health & safety

ASSETS

• Proven experience running lab instrumentation, including but not limited to liquid handlers, multi-mode plate readers is an asset
• Biosafety Level 2 (BSL 2) and containment experience is an asset
