Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. This individual will support the design, installation, and operation of magnet and Tokamak manufacturing equipment.   They will lead and further develop the key safety programs of Machinery Safety, Lock Out Tag Out, and Electrical safety.  The individual will author and administer training, ensure compliance with regulations at all levels, conduct safety investigations, and work with our team to develop safety protocols and plans. 

This team member will:

  • Identify Machinery Safety risks and lead or support mitigation efforts
  • Develop the process for safety documentation in equipment design reviews as well as the installation, commissioning, and start up of equipment
  • Execute Lock Out Tag Out program development for training and procedures
  • Develop production and facility electrical safety practices
  • Support the development of non-routine work safety protocols such as Job Hazard Analysis and Permit to Work for high risk and contracted work
  • Author and administer safety trainings and maintain training records
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and city safety regulations and obtain and maintain necessary permits
  • Work with manufacturing, operations, and R&D personnel to develop safety protocols and standard operating procedures
  • Support safety efforts across scope of work as necessary

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an environmental, health, and safety or engineering discipline or equivalent experience (mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering)
  • 3+ years’ experience in Safety roles
  • Experience with moving machinery (industrial or manufacturing), lock out tag out, and electrical safety practices
  • Risk Assessment methodology
  • Experience in creating a safety program from the ground up
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting/ problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Job Hazard Analysis for Non-Routine Work experience
  • Contractor Management experience
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs infrequently
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, fumes, noise, strong magnets, and potential for exposure based on evaluating or mitigating hazards
  • Willingness to work calls during off-shifts in case of adverse events
  • Willingness to conduct 5-10% periodic travel
