Mechanical Engineer, Propulsion Systems

Zoox Propulsion engineers get to work with one of the most exciting and dynamic systems within our L5 Autonomous Vehicle. This Powertrain Engineering team at Zoox is responsible for drive inverters, electric motors, disconnect units, power transmission, controls, integration, testing, and future concepts. As a Mechanical Engineer you actively participate in architecture definition, design, analysis and verification of our highly integrated electric drive units. You will also work cross-functionally to solve complex packaging, thermal, electrical, mechanical and vehicle attribute issues by referring back to first principles. The ideal candidate is open minded, self-motivated, hands-on and possesses an ambition to push the state of the art.

Responsibilities

• You will be responsible for the 3D design and 2D drafting of mechanical and electrical components and assemblies of various materials and manufacturing processes.
• You will complete design analysis on structures, joints, thermals, and CFD at the component and assembly levels.
• You will collaboratively solve interfaces, packaging, NVH, and potentially EMI issues.
• You will support system function definition, HW-SW integration, validation, DFMEA, and Functional Safety with cross-functional support.
• You will support part and assembly releases.
• You will collaborate with technicians and engineers to create working diagrams and instructions.
• You will support the development of engineering test plans, durability and reliability calculations.
• You will support prototyping, builds, and testing.
• You will participate or lead supplied components, development and testing.

Qualifications

• BS or higher degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering
• 4+ years of design experience considered for different position levels.
• Deep technical knowledge of engineering fundamentals
• Material science knowledge of different materials (metals, plastics, insulators, fasteners, sealants) and their design for manufacturing.
• Proficiency in 3D design (Catia 3DX, NX, Solidworks, Pro-E, etc).
• Proficiency with 2D drafting to high ASME Y14.5 standards.
• Excellent communication skills, both orally and written.
• Passion for electric, autonomous mobility, and specifically EV powertrain development.
• Ability to work and learn independently, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Bonus Qualifications

• Direct experience in automotive powertrains and simulation.
• Experience using GD&T control.
• Experience with advanced modeling techniques.
• Experience with PLM systems, change control, and BOM structures.
• Knowledge of design, automotive, and safety standards.
• Experience with a product manufactured at high volumes.
• Working knowledge of Matlab and Ansys.
