RMI is seeking an Associate-Tech Track (Data Visualization Analyst) to support our exciting new workstream focused on providing tools to assist banks, investors, and financial supervisors measure the climate-alignment of financial portfolios and clients. About PACTA:

The Paris Agreement Capital Transition Assessment (or PACTA) is the world first and only free of charge and open source alignment tool that allows financial institution to measure the alignment of their portfolios. PACTA is independent, science-based and actionable. PACTA measures alignment per sector and technology. The reason being that each sector needs to decarbonize at its own speed, with the Power and Auto sector needing to decarbonize faster than for example Steel and Cement. 

PACTA allows users to incorporate alignment considerations into their sustainable finance strategies and governance, risk management, as well as engagement and target setting. PACTA allows you to fulfill the scenario analysis recommendations of the TCFD. 

PACTA offers a free online tool for investors. Investors upload their portfolios and receive an interactive report within minutes. In 2021, the Platform had more than 1700 registered users. This tool was launched in 2018. PACTA also offers a stand-alone offline version for banks. In 2021, more than 75 banks from all over the world ran this software. This tool was launched in 2020,  

PACTA also offers a Coordinated Projects programme to governments, supervisors and trade bodies, where the alignment of an entire financial sector is measured at once, and where individual financial institutions often receive individual reports. So far this has been run in more than 16 countries, analyzing more than 2,600 financial institutions and over €11 trillion in assets.

Position Overview:

As a Data Visualization Analyst, you are responsible for design and implementation of clear, creative graphs and other visual representations. You are involved at different stages of project development:

* research origination, explorative data analysis - conceptual plot design

* mature research, results reporting - output of the end results for publication

* analysts support - tools, libraries, workshops and coaching sessions that can be used independently by analysts

* software development - writing production code that is run on web and app servers

As a Data Visualization Analyst, you are a creative problem solver who uses your quantitative, technical and analytical abilities to conduct compelling research and assessment around vital energy issues. You will collaborate with team members to craft visionary yet practical solutions for our research questions and clients. 

You will be an independent contributor and work closely with colleagues on projects under the direction of more senior staff. You will develop expertise in the content area of your specific program within RMI and will provide subject-matter support on that topic to other RMIers. 

Your key job responsibilities as a Data Visualization Analyst primarily include: 

  • Lead the design of graphs and other visualizations to represent PACTA analysis and outputs
  • Work with Analysts and Software Developers to map out methodology upgrades and other changes into a visual design
  • Work with the Influence Team to develop relevant website and marketing materials and campaigns
  • Develop interactive dashboards and apps to demonstrate research outputs and questions
  • Stay up to date on PACTA developments and challenges

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Undergraduate degree in an applicable field such as engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, energy), business (marketing, finance, international), finance, international development, public policy, economics, computer science, mathematics, architecture, physical and social sciences. 
  • Beginner software development skills, specifically, R and Python
  • Intermediate web development skills, specifically HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Intermediate graphics design skills, specifically Adobe Illustrator
  • Understanding of, or desire to learn, basic financial concepts, analyses and metrics (eg: debt, equity, cash flows, net present value, cost of capital) especially with an interest in issues related to climate change and the energy technology transition to a low-carbon economy.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in an applicable field
  • Demonstrable experience with data analysis
  • Good understanding of statistics is a plus.
  • Previous work, internship or research experience in data analysis, finance, energy or climate-related topics
  • Ability to stick with a problem through resolution but also knowing when to ask for help.
  • Ability to listen actively, be diplomatic, and share knowledge and information well.
  • Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines and take risks by exploring and testing new ideas.
  • Experience working among diverse groups with varying perspectives and/or facilitating challenging conversations. 
  • Demonstrated initiative and accomplishment in previous work.
