Job Description

We’re making zero carbon happen

We’re OVO Group, a big family of companies united by a single vision: to get to zero carbon, fast.

We call this Plan Zero – and it shows how we’ll be fighting the climate crisis and transforming the way people use energy over the next decade. To do this, we need the sharpest minds. Are you up for the challenge?

Do great green things with OVO Energy

So much has changed since we launched in 2009.  Our goal remains the same though: make energy cheaper, greener, and simpler. Just as it was on day one.

Everyone belongs at OVO

Our aim is to build a diverse and inclusive movement: teams of brilliant people, with unique talents, skills, passions, and experiences.

We encourage everyone to join us, whatever your gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, life experience, or background. So please come as you are – we can’t wait to meet you.

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

As OVO moves closer to 5m customers, we are starting to reshape our data teams to power our strategy of providing a world leading customer experience to net zero carbon. The data teams operate in a federated structure, with both central and embedded teams, to support our growing scale and ambition.

We are looking for a Data Scientist with a strong analytical background, and hands-on experience creating data science products. You will be part of our centralised Data Science team You will play a key role in helping technical and non-technical stakeholders make data-driven decisions. The team is c. 60 consisting of Data Engineers, Analysts, Data Scientists and Product Managers supporting the commercial and operational side, providing immense opportunity to get exposure in diverse business areas.

What will I be doing?

  • Work closely with stakeholders to identify, define & develop data science opportunities to drive commercial and customer benefit that you can solve.
  • These can range from improving the customer experience; reducing contacts and identifying the next best action for customers through to ensuring our customers are set up for success financially during this challenging time.
  • Build and own machine learning models, with a data product approach. Responsible for the whole lifecycle from prototyping and modelling through to productionisation and maintenance.
  • Lead on the identification and use of appropriate methodology for the use case at hand. In some cases this may be a complex machine learning model, in others this may be helping design and evaluate an A/B test. Leaning on the wider data science community to ensure your approach follows best practice and continuously innovates.
  • Communicate and present complex data to audiences of all technical levels and seniority, using appropriate data visualisations to tell a story with data. And, work with the stakeholders to ensure application of outputs.
  • Play an active role in the data science community to contribute to a culture of collaboration, openness, and innovation.
  • Stay curious and enthusiastic about keeping up to date with the latest data science developments.

Is this the job for me?

  • Experience in a similar data science role.
  • Experience using cloud platforms (ideally GCP and DataRobot).
  • Experience using common data science tooling (in particular SQL & python).
  • Can confidently create, present and interpret graphical representations of data.
  • Knowledge and experience of building, deploying and maintaining machine learning/statistical models.
  • Statistical knowledge including sampling, significance, hypothesis testing and probability theory
  • Highly numerate & analytical, able to delve into the detail but understand the strategic view
  • Able to document and version control  your work so others can pick it up and build on it, ideally using github.
  • Proven ability to engage productively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience of working in a fast paced environment where prioritisation is required
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills - able to articulate results clearly and concisely to senior stakeholders.

Ideally you will have:

    • Education to degree level in a numeric, scientific or engineering discipline.
    • Experience in any scheduling platform like Airflow and Dataforms.
    • An understanding of good software engineering practices.
