Who You Are
Sila Nanotechnologies is seeking a versatile Facilities Design Engineer for our Capital Projects team to play a key role in the design, construction, and startup of new battery material manufacturing facilities. On top of improvement projects at our headquarters facility, you will take on a variety of responsibilities to design and build Sila’s next-generation anode material factory. In our small team, you’ll be asked to take on broad technical responsibilities to specify equipment, review/approve external design documentation, and support installation and commissioning. You’ll work closely with internal teams and external engineering and construction partners to bring Sila’s large-scale capital projects to life.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Work closely with the Process Engineering and Supply Chain teams to specify, procure, install, and commission key balance-of-plant equipment like gas distribution systems, abatement units, cooling water systems, and life safety systems
- Design/specify new facilities equipment by understanding, documenting, and communicating utilities and infrastructure requirements from Sila’s custom reactors
- Engage with internal Sila teams and external vendors to support the integration of material handling systems into factories
- Work with external engineering resources for drawing and design review cycles, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Work with factory CAD models for reviews and layout design with Sila’s Industrial Engineer (detailed CAD design to be performed primarily by external contractors)
- Respond to technical RFIs and submittals across multiple contractors
- Travel frequently to project sites and contractors’ offices
Knowledge & Skills
- Minimum of 5 years experience in facilities design, engineering, or related project work
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline; preference for backgrounds in mechanical, civil, structural, and/or electrical engineering
- Experience managing contractors with complex scope
- Proven communication skills, across external and internal teams
- Familiarity with industrial codes and standards (for example: state fire codes, NEC/IEC, NFPA, ASME, API, etc)
- Ability to review and understand documentation, drawings, and specifications
- 2D and 3D CAD proficiency (AutoCAD preferred)
- Experience in related industries such as semiconductor, solar cell manufacturing, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology would be nice
- Willing to travel to build sites and contractors’ design offices for construction and commissioning support
Physical Demands & Work Conditions
- Move long distances and be stationary for extended periods of time
- Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and safety shoes
- Occasionally kneel or bend
