Job Description

Are you ready to rise to the challenge of climate change with the team that will deliver? Form Energy is a U.S. technology and manufacturing company that is developing and commercializing pioneering energy storage technologies to enable the electric grid to run on 100% renewable energy, every day of the year.
Supported by leading investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ArcelorMittal, TPG Rise, MIT’s The Engine, and others, we share a common belief that low-cost, multi-day energy storage is the key to enable tomorrow’s zero carbon electric grid. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, we are deeply motivated and inspired to create a better world. We need talented, hardworking individuals who share our goal of tackling the challenge of climate change. Do you want to work with us today to build a better tomorrow?
Role DescriptionWe are looking for an experienced system controls engineering manager to lead the development of the software that will operate our multi-day storage system. This role covers a broad scope of control system design functions, including battery module management, load balancing, auxiliary system operation, communication interfaces, and functional safety. In addition to a strong background in engineering management, this individual must bring experience in control system simulation methodologies and expertise in software development. Collaboration with other engineers and managers throughout the Tech Team will be a regular part of the workflow, as this role will include a blend of technical development and cross-team coordination.

What You'll Do:

  • Devise a system control software architecture that includes advanced functions, communications, safety, and security
  • Identify key technical resourcing needs then build and manage a team of controls engineers and software developers to implement the system control architecture
  • Develop control software for battery enclosure management, auxiliary/safety system operation, system coordination, and communication interfaces
  • Build battery control system models for power flow and auxiliary system algorithm development
  • Contribute to the software implementation of BMS control and state estimation algorithms
  • Validate control algorithms and software using SiL, MiL, HiL simulations
  • Develop system control interfaces and integrate with power conversion, SCADA, and EMS solutions from third parties
  • Coordinate with external teams on product requirements, validation test plans, certifications, and manufacturing processes for software and control system components

What You'll Bring:

  • BSc or greater in software engineering, electrical engineering, or similar
  • 10+ years industrial experience in controls software development; direct experience with grid-interactive energy storage systems is a plus
  • 3+ years experience in technical management in a product development environment
  • Track record of tactical decision making, strategic planning, and successful team building
  • Experience with model-based design (Simulink) and fluency in MIL, SIL, and HIL simulation methodologies
  • Deep experience with software development, particularly high-level languages including Python; familiarity with embedded systems and low-level languages is a plus
  • Solid knowledge of electrochemistry, battery safety, and battery state estimation methodologies (SOC, SOH, SOE)
  • Strong background in closed loop control systems (PID)
  • Firm understanding of common industrial communication protocols and physical interfaces (e.g., Modbus, CANbus)
  • Comfortable working with engineering tools such as CAN loggers, software debuggers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and HV test equipment
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills
  • Strong technical communication skills, both written and verbal
