Software Engineer, Platform

The Company

Sofar is on a mission to connect the world’s oceans. We design, build, and deploy the largest privately owned network of marine weather sensors to power the world’s best marine weather forecasts. Our data helps our customers to increase efficiency and reduce emissions, delivering tools to governments and other stakeholders to understand impacts of climate change on extreme weather and ocean health. We live on Planet Ocean, and our goal is to create the ocean intelligence needed to ensure a sustainable future.

The Role

You’ll work cross-functionally and across different software teams to contribute Sofar’s mission. As part of the Software Platform team, you will be working with the Spotter Fleet team, the Weather & Data team, and Wayfinder teams to align on an infrastructure vision and roadmap. You’ll be responsible for building out systems and processes to make managing infrastructure easy and efficient across different software teams.

Some projects you’ll be a part of:

• Building out infrastructure for our external facing APIs
• Transitioning to configuration as code (Terraform all the things!)
• Processes for managing data stores, services, deployments, etc.
• Scaling out our weather model compute infrastructure

About You

• 4+ years of applicable engineering experience
• Have excellent technical communication skills
• Understand broadly the entire engineering stack and strong coding skills in one or more languages (bonus for: Typescript, Rust, React, or Python)
• Have expertise in Infrastructure as Code, AWS, Docker, CI/CD tooling
• Excel in problem solving skills, especially at a systemic level and have a bias for action.
• Driven by impact, working on grungy problems if they have a high impact on the business or the health of the infrastructure.
• Care deeply about the quality of the software / systems you build and strike the right balance between idealism and pragmatism.
