Oil and Gas Solutions Initiative Overview:

RMI’s Oil and Gas Solutions Initiative (OGSI) advances data-driven approaches to quantifying oil and gas sector emissions and builds upon this foundation with action-oriented contextual analysis of the sector. Ultimately OGSI seeks to create climate-differentiated markets for oil and gas, and engage across stakeholders—including policymakers, industry, financial institutions, NGOs, and academics—to accelerate decarbonization of the oil and gas sector.

Position Overview: 

Managers at RMI are creative project leaders who guide and oversee team members to craft visionary yet practical solutions for our industry partners and research. As a Manager at RMI, you will be a primary project lead, and work closely with and under the direction of RMI’s Principals and Managing Directors to design and execute projects. General roles of a Manager:

  • Has responsibility for managing projects and/or significant portions of initiatives.
  • Often is responsible for managing and guiding more junior staff, particularly Associates and Senior Associates, although a Manager is sometimes an individual contributor.
  • Plays a role alongside Principals and Managing Directors to provide mentorship, professional development, and performance reviews of more junior staff.
  • Contributes to strategy-level conversations about initiatives at RMI.
  • Has expertise in at least one area and is conversant in one or more additional areas.
  • Represents RMI externally at mid-level events and in small or mid-sized groups.
  • Has at least some role in business development. 

Core Responsibilities:

Petrochemical and refining emissions-reduction efforts

  • Envision and create analytical tools for handling multivariate datasets, including oil and gas emissions and operational activity data.
  • Manage stakeholder relations with numerous groups including refinery and petrochemical companies, regulators, academic researchers, financial institutions, and other NGOs.
  • Offer technical and/or regulatory assistance on emissions-monitoring capabilities, greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory calculations, and process engineering.
  • Engage with community of methane, greenhouse gas, and air toxic experts and industry leaders, including CarbonMapper and ClimateTRACE.
  • Lead team in developing, modeling, and evaluating process simulations for petrochemical emission sources throughout the value chain.

Supply chain emissions tracking in petrochemicals and natural gas

  • Develop GHG accounting conventions and guidance for petrochemical and gas supply chains based on existing frameworks.
  • Work with digitization team to establish a blockchain-based data architecture to improve emissions traceability.
  • Engage with industry and relevant stakeholders to support adoption of GHG accounting interventions by existing standards and create standards where necessary.

Managing projects to yield breakthrough insights and results

  • With senior guidance, shape project strategies from inception to conclusion: determine change models, research methods, timelines, resource plans, communications plans, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Determine how results will be measured and be accountable for project results, rigorously challenging and validating findings from RMI teams and partners.
  • Act as the lead relationship manager with project partners and stakeholders.
  • Coach and motivate project team members and resolve any issues throughout project life cycle, including writing project-level reviews for junior staff.
  • Oversee teams that number between 2 to 25 contributors (internal and external).
  • Regularly contribute to external interviews, videos, and publications to share project insights.
  • Work hand-in-hand with our development team to create funding strategies.

Thought leadership and analysis

  • Perform literature reviews and data sourcing to support GHG and other emissions models.
  • Lead and contribute to research efforts and publications.
  • Represent RMI as an industry expert at key conferences and other public-speaking events.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field such as chemical engineering, environmental or physical sciences, economics, finance, or relevant degrees + 6 years of relevant work experience OR an M.S. degree in a related field + 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent time management, organization, entrepreneurship, and drive.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the petrochemical industry, oil and gas industry, regulatory agencies, consulting, project management, energy research, corporate strategy, or other related fields.
  • Knowledge of chemical manufacturing processes and oil refining.
  • Experience with life-cycle assessments, with a preferred focus on oil and gas supply chains.
  • Experience managing teams and projects.
  • Experience writing grant proposals, managing donor relations and fundraising within a non-profit.

Location  

We are a remote-ready company with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our U.S. offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado, and Basalt, Colorado. This role can be located from anywhere in the continental United States. 

We provide you with the essential IT equipment plus a one-time home technology payment and a monthly work from home/commuter allowance to ensure you have a comfortable home office set up and necessary supplies. 

We love seeing each other in person! We occasionally gather for shared time together like retreats and learning experiences. Be ready to travel for occasional in-person meetings (and of course, we cover travel costs). Some roles may require more travel, which will be discussed during the hiring process. 

Important Note: As a U.S. federal contractor, RMI must comply with requirements outlined Executive Order Ensuring Adequate COVID Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors. This Executive Order requires that all federal contractors and subcontractors mandate and verify that all U.S. based employees are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compensation

RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Managers based in the U.S. join at the minimum to mid salary range of $103,000-$121,000. You would also have an additional 10% bonus target!
