Job Description

Who You Are

The Senior Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for developing and executing EHS programs to safeguard Sila’s employees, assets, and community. As we grow our company, this candidate will work on manufacturing and R&D processes to improve safety, reduce risks, and ensure compliance with internal and government standards. The ideal candidate will be eager to learn these processes to quickly support the development of health, safety, and environmental programs.  This candidate will help support the culture of learning and improving on our EHS and business performance at Sila. 

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Act as a role model promoting Sila’s EHS culture through coaching, exemplifying, developing, influencing, and training.
  • Develop, implement and support EHS programs including Isolation of Hazardous Energy (LOTO), Fall Protection, Contractor Safety, Emergency Response, Event Learning / Investigation, Confined Space Entry, and/or Environmental Compliance / Stewardship.
  • Perform and participate in design reviews, Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs), including task and equipment hazard assessment and recommending appropriate safeguards.
  • Support Sila’s Industrial Hygiene and chemical safety programs.
  • Conduct internal safety assessments/inspections, suggest corrective actions, monitor and track completion of corrective action items with site personnel.
  • Develop, conduct, and lead EHS training to foster company-wide growth of knowledge & expertise on EHS topics.
  • Support management of Sila Hazardous Waste program.
  • Collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders including operations, engineering, research supply chain and more to ensure compliance, learning, and continuous improvement.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Occupational Health and Safety or a relevant technical field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of work experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Manufacturing experience in semiconductor, PV, chemical industry, batteries or similar is helpful.
  • Experience with industrial workplace hazards and corresponding programs, such as LOTO, confined space, electrical safety, machine guarding, combustible dust, hazardous materials, and emergency response.
  • Knowledge of and experience interpreting government regulations including Cal/OSHA, Federal OSHA, and local and federal environmental regulations.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA, California Fire Code, and CGA regulations is a plus.
  • Experience in PHA facilitation including what if and HAZOPs desirable but not required.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Thoughtful, curious, and creative problem-solver.
  • Desire to work with a team and have the ability to work autonomously.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection regularly.
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes.
  • Move items up to 50 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts.
  • Walk moderate distances (such as from building to building and around the facility) and be stationary for extended periods of time.
