Job Description

Position overview 

RMI seeks an experienced whole-systems energy writer to work collaboratively across RMI's 13 program areas, especially those related to the economy and climate market forces: policy, data, finance, technology, and more. The Manager, Technical Grant and Proposal Development —a new role at RMI—will  develop written content for current and prospective global funders including individual donors, philanthropic foundations, family offices, bilateral and multi-lateral entities, corporate philanthropies, and other key stakeholders. This individual will report directly to the RMI Development Team’s Director of Marketing for Donor Relations and will work closely with the Managing Director for Development, program leadership, the Strategic Analysis and Engagement Group, the Monitoring and Evaluation team, development staff, and program marketers.

Roles and Responsibilities  

1.  Develop compelling materials for funders:  

  • Write proposals, reports, concept notes, and more, curating content across RMI, drafting for program approval, and editing content to target and maximize appeal for specific donor audiences  
  • Work together with program directors to clearly articulate program and initiative strategies to a donor audience, including strong impact measurement and well-researched theories of change, in advance of proposal development whenever possible 
  • Identify need for donor materials, including assessing and resolving gaps and other issues in program content, framing, and donor positioning 
  • Build and refine efficient structures and processes for supporting the program teams with donor-oriented materials. 

2.  Support inter-program integration and project management 

  • Partner with program and executive leadership across our global organization to match strategic vision and approach with donor requirements and stipulations  
  • Manage document and process flow, at times involving multiple programs and stakeholders, ensuring deadlines are met with high-quality products 
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively and extensively with development and program staff in carrying out tasks and responsibilities, including with geographically dispersed colleagues 

3.   Advance Development initiatives that strengthen outcome-based messaging and writing across the organization   

  • Seek opportunities to coach and train colleagues on best practices in writing for donors  
  • Develop tools and templates that advance the organization’s capabilities in outcome-based messaging  
  • Ensure clear and accurate reflection of program outcomes and monitoring  and evaluation plans in proposals and donor materials  

4. Advance efficient and effective creation of and access to written development products   

  • Work with Development Communications team to develop and refine the team’s digital library, ensuring that all content is easy to find and accessible to program and development staff 
  • Write, maintain, and regularly update a catalog of “program paragraphs:” short, grab-and-go descriptions of programs and initiatives for Relationship Managers to use in concept notes and proposals    

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 4+ years of proven successful development and grant writing experience  
  • Writing experience and background in economics, energy, climate, and/or environmental topic areas required
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, and storytelling skills with demonstrated ability to synthesize large amounts of information into succinct communications 
  • Experience writing about program strategy and monitoring, evaluation, and learning structures for diverse audiences
  • 4+ years of relevant professional experience in a relevant field, such as energy, climate policy and economics, global development, sustainability, or other fields relevant to the decarbonization of energy systems  
  • Strong computer literacy, including familiarity with donor databases, Microsoft Office programs, and the Microsoft Suite

Additional Qualifications 

  • Passion for gaining insights and translating them into effective communications with associated action plans 
  • Positive, collaborative, "can-do" attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and ability to give and receive constructive feedback  
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and multitask in a dynamic environment working under extremely tight deadlines  
  • Proven success at writing a variety of proposals including for individual, foundation, corporate, and multilateral/bilateral donors  

Location:     

We are a remote-ready company with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our U.S. offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado, and Basalt, Colorado. This role can be located from anywhere in the continental United States. 

We provide you with the essential IT equipment plus a one-time home technology payment and a monthly work from home/commuter allowance to ensure you have a comfortable home office set up and necessary supplies. 

We love seeing each other in person! We occasionally gather for shared time together like retreats and learning experiences. Be ready to travel for occasional in-person meetings (and of course, we cover travel costs). Some roles may require more travel, which will be discussed during the hiring process.

Compensation 

RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Development Manager roles based in the U.S. join at the minimum to mid-salary range of $79,000- $93,000. You would also have an additional 10% bonus target!
