Job Description

About Piclo

The climate crisis means that now, more than ever, we need to act. Here at Piclo, we believe we are not powerless against climate change and are focused on enabling the transition to a decarbonised future. Our team is on a mission to make our energy systems smart, flexible and sustainable.

We’re hiring a Service / UX Designer to work alongside our friendly team of software developers, product managers, designers and more that are at the forefront of transforming the energy sector.

The role

We’re looking for an experienced Service / UX Designer to help develop our core product, Piclo Flex, to increase participation in domestic and international flexibility markets.  You’ll be joining our friendly team at an exciting time, as we’re busy preparing for a period of sustained growth.

Within your cross-functional product team, and with support from other design colleagues, you can expect to be called upon to bring your experience to bear in the following areas:

  • Service design: high-level exploration, design and coordination of key customer journeys across multiple B2B touchpoints.
  • User research: planning and facilitating user research activities as and when the team deem necessary. You’ll need to be confident testing with users via multiple methods including via video conferencing. You’ll also need to be comfortable analysing your findings and presenting them both to your team and the wider business when necessary.
  • Workshop facilitation: you will need to be comfortable planning and leading group-based activities with your team as well as external stakeholders where needed to discover insight, build consensus and generate ideas.
  • Prototyping: you’ll be expected to design and build prototypes (we use Figma) that can be tested on users and provide key feedback on your ideas. Where ideas are related to data, it may be necessary for you to prototype in data tables (using Google Sheets or Excel).
  • User interface design: designing production ready interfaces and contributing to our UI library and wider design system. You’ll be able to work in conjunction with other members so the design team can help with elements you’re less familiar with in UI design—we believe design is a team sport.
  • Acceptance testing: all members of a product team take part in the testing of their work, and you’ll also be expected to take part in acceptance (quality assurance) testing alongside the PM, Devs and our QA Engineer. This responsibility may also extend to providing Customer Support for features that are still in BETA.
  • Cross-team collaboration: The design function at Piclo is growing and we are continuously looking to improve how we work together. We expect every designer to participate in cross-team activities such as feedback sessions and related workshops.

Who we are

Founded in 2013 by Andy, Alice and James, we are a quickly growing team of +40. Backed by Clean Growth Fund, Mott MacDonald Ventures and others, Piclo is a tech company poised to disrupt the way that electricity grids are run worldwide.

Piclo Flex is the leading independent marketplace that enables technologies, such as electric vehicles, to provide flexibility to electricity grids. With the rise in demand for renewables and clean technologies, our grids come under more stress and face challenges in maintaining the delicate balance of supply and demand. Piclo Flex smooths out the complex transition, delivering low-cost and resilient grids.

We know “flexibility” can be quite complex to understand at first, here’s a short video that explains “what are flexibility services?
