Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.
CFS is an innovative clean energy company designing SPARC, a tokamak-style fusion power demonstrator able to achieve net energy plasmas. This demonstrator will lead to ARC, a power-plant scale fusion power generator system. SPARC includes high-temperature superconducting and copper magnets, thermal shields, cryogenic cooling systems, vacuum vessels, and plasma facing components, all subject to large operational loads (thermal, electromagnetic, etc.) and in a dense, tightly packaged power device. Critical to the success and performance of the device is the precise alignment during assembly of the magnet systems that control the heated plasma at the center of the device. As the Metrology Engineer your responsibility would be the strategic and operational planning, execution, supervision, and review of all precision alignment activities during assembly of the device to ensure that all critical systems are within allowable alignment limits for optimal SPARC plasma stability and performance. In addition, this role is responsible for the general metrological and alignment planning, and measurement activities, of all components within SPARC for spatial fit, dimensional conformance, and any other functional requirements of the systems as needed.
We are a fast-paced, agile, growing company that values diversity of thought and creativity, looking to apply our knowledge to pioneer a new method of energy generation for the betterment of the world. We look for people who have bold new ideas and perspectives, enthusiasm, imagination, a pioneering spirit, and a talent for execution to join us in our endeavor to create new fusion power technology that could change the world.

This team member will:

  • Detailed process planning, development, and analysis of critical precision alignment activities necessary for successful assembly of SPARC, including setup and measurement configurations using laser tracker, CMM arm, or other metrology tools as necessary
  • Analyze and solve metrology problems using advanced mathematical and engineering knowledge
  • Use statistics to analyze measurement performance as well as standards and processes
  • Supervision of metrology technician teams during alignment activities
  • Facilitate and coordinate the alignment activities and strategies of all individual SPARC systems, including direct input on system hardware, tooling, and characteristics to ensure feasibility of proper alignment within the designated plan
  • Work in collaboration with Physics teams to develop the error-field bounding plan and approach, and that the characteristics and capabilities of tooling, system hardware, and overall strategy can accomplish alignments within maximum limits as outlined in this plan
  • Perform uncertainty evaluation and analysis for measurement standards and associated measurement.
  • As-built large-scale scanning of coil and other system components, for use in further manufacturing steps, or progressive assessment of alignment approach and strategy during assembly steps
  • Optimization of measurement processes and setups for areas of improvement, and conduct risk assessment of measurement approaches and strategies
  • Conduct technical audits of the calibration laboratory (including suppliers) to verify traceability of standards and compliance with published standards and guidelines
  • Develop, document, and maintain procedures for precision alignment plans
  • Instruct technician teams on basic use of metrological tools and processes, as well as training of assembly teams for specific measurement processes
  • Review of all results from alignment activities, confirming good placement of systems as required
  • Develop calibration systems and procedures to ensure continued and reliable quality to the ongoing measurement activities
  • Assist projects in trouble shooting and root cause analysis of measurement issues or measurement system problems and advise project engineers in measurement techniques & equipment operation

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience working with engineering, manufacturing, or operations
  • Requires basic mechanical aptitude including ability to read and interpret dimensions, tolerances, and assembly notes
  • Understanding of basic problem-solving skills, including statistical analysis, and ability to use these tools to drive measurement setup and configurations, methodology analysis, root cause identification and problem solving
  • 1+ years experience with CMM arm tools and 3+ experience with laser tracking metrology tools
  • 3+ years experience in handling, assembly, or installation of tightly tolerance large structural components

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience in table-top metrology processes and work for small-scale components
  • Experience with precision alignment of large, delicate, and complex structures in dense spaces, involving multi-setup plans, incorporation of manufacturing tolerancing in tandem with field metrology, and component measurement transfers between multiple setups for multi-body alignment in software models previous to final field alignment
  • Experience with and expertise in GD&T
  • Ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • Attention to detail
  • Emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity
  • Understanding manufacturing methods and their impact on designs
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate test requirements and specifications to determine proper equipment specifications and calibration levels
  • Project Management skills including excellent data handling, documentation, critical milestone creation, communication, multitasking, and organizational skills to drive towards commercially viable solutions
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel occasionally

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.
At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.
