Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Cleartrace, an Austin-based Climate Tech startup, is on a mission to help companies proactively decarbonize their energy consumption. Cleartrace allows companies to stand behind their claims of carbon reductions, sustainability, and renewable energy to prevent greenwashing and provide a source of unified, auditable truth. 

We’re looking for a strategic, decisive Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to join the Cleartrace team and lead our product management and engineering team. 

Our industry is evolving very rapidly, so this role offers unlimited learning opportunities and a priceless chance to bring much needed change to an industry plagued by greenwashing and vague carbon accounting math.

We are based in Austin, Texas, but the role is open to the right candidate anywhere in the United States.  

About you in this role:

In the role of CTO, you are passionate about climate tech and making an impact on climate change! You have a background in either energy markets, renewable energy, or a similar industry. You understand the urgency and importance of this work and you have the ability to work in a fast paced, start-up environment. As a senior leader in the company, you are well-versed with effectively managing bilateral relationships between various internal and external stakeholders. You are a catalyst for the product and engineering team and you’ll be an integral leader on the leadership team. You know how to balance both long-term and short-term product priorities to accelerate new business opportunities.

In this role, you will:

• Work with the leadership team to set clear priorities and goals for product and engineering, balancing the long-term and immediate needs.
• Develop and manage annual and quarterly budgets and resource allocation plans.
• Define the company’s overall technology strategy to support business objectives including goal/KPI/OKR setting and performance metrics.
• Facilitate the development and implementation of disaster recovery and IT security failure plans. Oversee data security, management, and governance.
• Manage technology partner relationships and support strategic sales opportunities with the sales teams.
• Make infrastructure decisions, ensuring technical excellence, versatility, safety and soundness, resiliency and scalability in the architecting and engineering of product solutions, as well as managing all technical delivery.
• Ensure tight collaboration across departments to drive strategic initiatives, including understanding of the alignment between technology strategy and various technology road maps.
• Collaborate with sales and marketing to ensure that the product roadmap is aligned with market needs.
• Evangelize Cleartrace solutions as one of our technical experts with customers, at trade shows and conferences as needed.

Qualifications:

• Experience in sustainability, energy, or similar industry
• 7+ years experience leading engineering and product organizations by creating strategic plans and setting timelines for evaluation, development, and deployment of all technical and web services
• 7+ years of Engineering management experience and experience hiring, training and developing career paths for high-performance, scaling engineering teams
• 5+ years of experience helping to assess product-market fit and shaping roadmap goals around key customer and strategic insights  
• Extensive experience in data-based software and product planning and track record of taking product through a life cycle of inception to launch within a deadline
• Knowledge of latest technological advances that could benefit company
• Knowledge of all functions and roles within IT department
• Knowledge of best information security practices
• Excellent leadership skills
• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure

Bonus:

• Undergrad degree in computer science, information systems, business, or related field
• Startup experience and scaling a technology team from 10 to 50+
