Join us on our mission as we transform energy storage to enable a more sustainable future.  We are looking to add a Principal EHS Engineer - Member Technical Staff (PMTS) to our Environment Health & Safety team. The ideal candidate has a passion for the development, implementation, and maintenance of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs to ensure compliance, injury prevention, and risk mitigation

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take a lead role in managing all EHS aspects for building operations
  • Evaluate proposed EHS compliance laws and regulations to determine applicability and impact to current programs and operations
  • Implement EHS management systems programs and associated documentation
  • Complete audits, IH sampling, ergonomic assessments and assist in pollution prevention activities
  • Manage safety and environmental/sustainability metrics
  • Provide input in equipment design and installation projects in EHS; ensure safety and environmental compliance during construction projects
  • Interface with site EHS committees and regulatory personnel
  • Manage all aspects of environmental programs, including:
  • ~~~ Ensure BAAQMD permit requirements are met.  Participate in abatement selection, manage operation and discharges per air regulations
  • ~~~ Oversee chemical storage and handling. Serve as a technical resource in evaluating chemical hazards
  • ~~~ Manage TSCA compliance for all incoming and outgoing chemicals
  • ~~~ Ensure all waste is properly managed
  • ~~~ Update HMBP as required
  • ~~~ Manage wastewater and storm water programs
  • Play an integral part in the Emergency Response Team
  • Complete all assigned and required training satisfactorily and on time

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degree in chemistry, engineering, or related fields
  • minimum 10 years of work experience (8 yrs with MS; 6 yrs with PhD) in the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) field
  • Strong Environmental Experience, including hazardous materials and waste, air emissions, wastewater, sustainability 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a constantly evolving environment with Facilities, Hardware, and R&D leaders, and staffing at all levels
  • Ability to approach sophisticated problems by actively seeking information and new insights from a variety of sources, consistently looking for novel ways to solve problems, and mastering unfamiliar information, tasks, and situations quickly and optimally

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • MS in chemistry or engineering fields
  • CSP, CIH, or CHMM certification
  • Experience working within a battery or automotive operations and/or manufacturing teams
  • Strong project management skills as the position requires integration across various teams
  • Strong data management and analysis skills
  • Experience with environmental audits, ISO 14000, TSCA compliance, IATA, BAAQMD compliance, waste minimization, sustainability
  • Strong people skills as the position will be required to influence people

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work with airtight isolation chambers and/or wear neoprene or vinyl gloves for 15-30% of the time
  • Frequently reach above shoulder heights and below the waist
  • May be required to use hand or power tools
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crawl, lift up to 30 pounds, push and extend arms
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
