 The Sr. Water/Wastewater Process Engineer is responsible for development of process (and mechanical) discipline deliverables for projects in the municipal and industrial water/wastewater industry. This role works closely with the Customer, Project Sales Lead, Project Development Manager, and the rest of Development Team to define the project objectives and create/execute a plan for maximizing the Customer’s current operations through strategic alignment with their vision and mission. The Sr. Water/Wastewater Process Engineer is a technical leader and champion of innovation that navigates complex systems, processes, customers, and procurement strategies. This role may also be responsible for managing, training, developing, and/or mentoring direct and indirect reports.

Primary Duties: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily.

  • Conduct site visits, condition assessments, and process performance evaluations of water/wastewater treatment plants
  • Oversee and direct data collection and analysis activities
  • Perform and/or review design calculations, model simulations (using BioWin or similar software), hydraulic calculations, etc. for municipal and industrial water/wastewater treatment plants
  • Perform and/or review concept designs, feasibility assessments, and alternative evaluations
  • Perform and/or review preliminary, front-end, and detailed design activities
  • Develop and/or review plans, specifications, and other contract documents
  • Develop and/or review reports, technical memos, and other communications
  • Make equipment selections, receive budgetary equipment quotes, and build/maintain relationships with equipment suppliers and vendors
  • Perform and/or oversee design services during construction, including review submittals, respond to requests for information, conduct field investigations, assist in startup and commissioning, prepare record drawings and standard operating manuals, etc.
  • Assist in project permitting efforts with applicable regulatory and municipal entities
  • Work directly with other engineering disciplines, office/project staff, client, and sub-contractors
  • Supervise, mentor, and provide support to junior-level engineering staff

 

Education/Certification Required: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • Professional Engineering license

 

Experience Required:

  • 8+ years of related water and wastewater process engineering (10+ years preferred)
  • Thorough knowledge of physical, biological, chemical, and hydraulic principals of water and wastewater treatment plant design
  • Experience developing engineering deliverables such as engineering reports, design drawings, technical specifications, and other engineering deliverables
  • Experience with retrofit, rehabilitation, and/or optimization water/wastewater treatment projects
  • An understanding of energy performance contracts or energy focused design-build projects in lower and higher education or municipal facilities is strongly preferred
  • Experience or understanding of design-build or similar alternative project delivery methods and front-end engineering process is strongly preferred
  • Active participation in regional and/or national professional associations is preferred

 

Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data and modeling results
  • Strong critical thinking skills to perform engineering and design responsibilities
  • Ability to lead scope development analysis for new technologies, innovations, and/or solutions
  • Proficiency with BioWin (or similar) modeling software strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills required
  • Excellent time management and organization skills required
  • Ability to work independently and with a project team required
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and oversee work of less experienced engineers/designers and third-party design professionals
  • Ability to manage change management and continuous improvement preferred

 

Travel:

  • Travel will vary, but may require travel greater than 25% of the time

While performing the primary functions of the job, the employee is regularly exposed a general office environment.  During periods of project site visits, the employee will be exposed to outside weather conditions as well as mechanical equipment rooms, which could consist of confined spaces and loud noises. Employee may work in different environments while on various job sites. This job requires work to be performed on project sites and thus will require greater than 25% travel to project sites. Travel will occur using an automobile or by airplane to destinations.
