Data Scientist Internship - Fall 2022

Our Mission  

SPAN develops products that accelerate the rapid adoption of renewable energy in the home. The flagship SPAN Smart Panel is the first true evolution for the traditional home electric panel, harnessing enhanced technology for metering, monitoring, and control. An expanded product suite of intelligent, integrated solutions radically lowers the cost and complexity of energy upgrades–including solar, batteries and EVs–empowering homeowners to be active, resilient and informed players in the energy market.

The Role 

In this cross-functional position, you will be empowered to become a data product expert and apply technical reasoning, design thinking, and data analysis to a variety of projects, from design through deployment. Our systems collect a large volume of energy monitoring data that needs to be analyzed, processed and used to develop features for the next generation of automated decision making products.

As an intern, you will work alongside the data science and product teams at SPAN to identify opportunities and requirements for new product features, support these decisions through data analysis of customer data and be part of their development, implementation, and evaluation. The role will give you broad exposure to many aspects of product data science: we’ll expect you to do a mix of research on product features, data analysis, model development, and data collection.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, model, and forecast electrical consumption data

• Research and break down requirements for new products and features

• Conduct literature analysis, validate findings, and design machine learning models

• Implement, test, and evaluate new features and products using field measurements

• Collect, clean, and analyze data sets of electrical consumption and machine predictions

• Be ready to pitch in on projects outside of your subject area, when needed

About You 

Required Qualifications

We are seeking some has:

• Passion for clean energy technology and decarbonization 

• Excellent communication skills

• Pursuing a degree in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, or equivalent fields

• Experience with the analysis of large data sets

• Strong understanding of most common machine learning techniques and their applications

• Experience using Python and SQL

Bonus Qualifications

We would love to find someone who has:

• Prior experience with product development, especially involving machine learning systems

• Experience with using cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS)

• Experience with signal processing

• Experience with optimization

• Experience with causal inference

• Experience with or interest in data visualization

• Cool projects or coursework in data science / data analytics
