Job Overview

The Technical Specialist position entails interpreting and implementing the Seafood Chain of Custody standards, quality control of audits, prompt and professional customer service, and administrative and technical support to field auditors, clients, international affiliates, and colleagues. The position also allows for periodic field auditing.

Relevant Services/Schemes:     

  • Marine Stewardship Council Chain of Custody (MSC)
  • Aquaculture Stewardship Council Chain of Custody (ASC)
  • Responsible Fisheries Management Chain of Custody (RFM)

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Review audit reports providing oversight and quality control
  • Make decisions to grant, maintain, reduce, expand, suspend, or terminate a Certificate Holder’s Chain of Custody certification based on evidence of conformance with requirements.
  • Become proficient in program and certification requirements, ensuring a pragmatic approach to a wide range of circumstances while maintaining the integrity of the certification standard
  • Perform chain of custody audits (at industrial and commercial settings, facilities such as floating processors, dockside processors, broad-line distributors, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.), as well as witness audits of existing and new auditors; produce associated audit reports.
  • Consider and implement changes affecting certification (either client or standard holder initiated)
  • Monitor the status of clients’ Corrective Action Requests (CARs), including communication with clients, reviewing evidence, and making decisions on whether client actions are sufficient.
  • Ensure implementation of program procedures and documents
  • Communicate regularly with clients, auditors, and international affiliate staff/auditors, ensuring they are informed of changing standards, policies, and requirements in a clear, effective, and concise manner
  • Assist with maintenance and development of programmatic quality initiatives, internal procedures, external communication materials, and templates
  • Maintain client and audit records in relevant databases/portals

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental or biological science, marine biology, business, economics, or technical program with two years’ work experience in any of the following: seafood or fisheries industry, food industry, supply chain management, science, traceability, policy development; or
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in business, economics, environmental or biological science, or technical program; or
  • 2-4+ years of work experience applicable to the description above
  • Complete fluency in English and work experience that involves professional written communication
  • Strong organization, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills
  • Proficient with business software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Salesforce
  • Strong attention to detail, customer service, and teamwork orientation
  • Ability to take the initiative, good judgment, and ability to work independently under pressure in a changing environment
  • Ability to work in the US and abroad as needed
  • ISO training certification or willingness to complete the ISO training offered by SCS
  • Language skill in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Russian or Japanese is highly desirable
  • Audit experience is highly desirable

Physical Requirements

This position is an office-based job primarily, with occasional travel to client sites. Ability to sit/stand at a computer station for 6+ hours/day, travel via private/public transportation and carry luggage, and walk and stand for 2+ hours/day when auditing. Must be able to speak and listen to employees and customers virtually and in person.
