Job Description

Job summary: Carbon Reform is hiring a self-motivated scientist or engineer to lead the optimization of our proprietary polymer sorbent formulation and lead the ongoing scale-up from lab to pilot line manufacturing. This role will also involve the development and scale-up of our sorbent fabrication method, which uses the formulation as the input material. This sorbent is the primary component in our carbon capture device for indoor air.

Responsibilities:

  • Perfect and optimize our existing polymer formulation recipes and methods
  • Develop new polymer formulations from literature and prior knowledge
  • Formalize our processes through meticulous data collection, preparation of SOPs, development of quality control standards, etc
  • Build/acquire and set up equipment to scale-up the formulation process
  • Work with our product engineering team to refine product specs and use the specs to inform our formulation needs
  • Improve and formalize our existing sorbent fabrication process
  • Work with our product engineering team to scale-up the sorbent fabrication process

What we’re looking for:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience working in formulation R&D, process development, or related roles in the polymer or specialty chemical industries
  • Experience working in both a lab and a manufacturing environment
  • Enjoys building and tinkering, and has hands-on experience building and troubleshooting equipment and fixtures
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of chemistry, heat transfer, thermodynamics, etc (at the equivalent level of a Bachelor's degree from a 4-year university)
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment where every day is different - fail fast and move forward
  • Self-driven and independent, requiring minimal day-to-day supervision
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with the rest of the team to achieve company goals
  • Cares about the mission of carbon capture and more broadly, the environment and human health!

Bonus qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD in chemical engineering, polymer science, materials science, or related field
  • Experience with chemical/polymer characterization techniques (i.e. DSC, TGA, FTIR, etc)
  • Experience with SEM and optical microscopy
  • Experience with ChemBET and surface adsorption characterization
  • Experience with 3D printing or other plastic fabrication methods (i.e. extrusion molding, etc)
