Job Description

Job title: Data Engineer

Location: Bristol, London (including hybrid)

Salary: £39,500 - £91,500

Kaluza wants to power a world where net-zero is within everyone’s reach, by building the platform that will accelerate a sustainable, affordable and resilient energy transition. It’s a huge challenge, but often the toughest problems are the most rewarding to solve.

Since launching in 2019, Kaluza’s technology has been empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers.

From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, our real-time cloud platforms transform supplier operations, reducing cost to serve and boosting engagement. And most importantly, they enable suppliers' customers to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies.

Kaluza’s Energy Retail Platform

You’ll be working on the Kaluza’s Energy Retail platform. This is a SaaS technology platform that aims to revolutionise the operating platforms for energy retailers globally. This platform has been built with scale and technical quality in mind and is the foundation for decarbonisation efforts by Kaluza’s customers.

We are in the process of transforming the platform's architecture to create global “spinnable” environments, this is to support rapid onboarding of multiple clients and allow Kaluza to adapt to an ever changing energy landscape.

What will I be doing?

You’ll be developing analytical products, which surface insight through the platform for both internal analysts and external clients. You’ll start by operationalising our analytics data-mart, after which you will work on more advanced products, such as real-time stream analysis and self-service exploration tools. You’ll be working in a close-knit agile team with several other developers, a product manager and a software engineering manager.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing platform features: mainly coding in Python and SQL using data technologies including Google DataForm, Apache Airflow, BigQuery, and Kafka working using infrastructure as code (Terraform) and a data mesh architecture.
  • Improve data quality: implement automated data quality testing which drives a respect for data quality that ensures the analysis can be robust
  • Stakeholder engagement: Working closely with insight analysts and the wider business to understand their needs from analytical products
  • Platform health: Defining and building effective monitoring for data platform health
  • High-quality engineering: Engaging with our data community and wider tech team to support adoption of good engineering and data governance practices

Is this the job for me?

It could be if some of these apply

  • You genuinely want to be in the front-line of the climate change battle.
  • You have experience with data engineering delivering analytical solutions, especially in the Google stack
  • You have experience with data modelling using SQL in systems such as DataForm or DBT
  • You have experience orchestrating complex systems using a system such as Composer/Apache Airflow, Luigi or Google Workflows
  • You love building scalable, resilient analytical products
  • You seek learning opportunities to deepen your expertise or broaden your knowledge
  • You are a data engineer, analytics engineer or software engineer with an interest in the data domain (data modelling, data transformation, etc.) or highly motivated technical data analyst
  • You are comfortable working in an agile development environment that employs continuous integration and continuous delivery best practices, and have experience of pair programming, BDD/TDD, CI/CD and deployment strategies
  • You have experience creating and productionising machine learning (ML) pipelines
  • You have experience designing and building large-scale data pipelines that utilise streaming technologies (e.g. Kafka Streams, Amazon Kinesis or similar) with an emphasis on the sourcing and transformation of data.
