Job Description

Job role: Lead Technical Writer

Location: London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Lisbon (including hybrid)

Salary: £75,000 - £90,000

Kaluza wants to power a world where net-zero is within everyone’s reach, by building the platform that will accelerate a sustainable, affordable and resilient energy transition. It’s a huge challenge, but often the toughest problems are the most rewarding to solve.

Since launching in 2019, Kaluza’s technology has been empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers.

From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, our real-time cloud platforms transform energy retailer operations, reducing cost to serve and boosting engagement. And most importantly, they enable suppliers' customers to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies.

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?

Our technical writers author complex ideas and technology in simple ways through documentation, guides and specifications. They are part of the Platform Design Team, and operate across Kaluza either by embedding in product teams, like our Developer Documentation team, or working on cross-cutting initiatives such as creating our Product Specification. We’re looking for a Lead Technical Writer who can manage our small team of technical writers and deliver fantastic documentation that helps our users to complete their jobs with Kaluza.

You will set the highest standards for technical writing across the organisation, and ensure all our product teams have the support they need. This could be product-related – microcopy, product launches and technical documentation (APIs and GraphQL)  – or for pitches, people policies, contracts and specifications.

What will I be doing?

  • Mentoring and managing the technical writing team, and helping them achieve their best work through editing and reviews.
  • Creating strategic writing frameworks, leading writing/copy projects and managing writers.
  • Identifying documentation needs and opportunities across Kaluza, including product specifications, people policies and legal contracts.
  • Establishing strong relationships with our product squads and teams, raising the visibility and impact of the technical writing practice.
  • Helping Product and Engineering teams document their work and building a ‘documentation-led’ mindset across the organisation.
  • Creating training resources to upskill others so that the overall quality of writing improves and scales.
  • Consistently producing high-quality work to tight deadlines.
  • Setting an example across the organisation for brilliantly written, simple to read, error-free technical content.

Is this the job for me?

Ideally you will have:

  • Experience managing a technical writing team in a product/engineering environment, particularly in B2B or platform businesses.
  • Knowledge of product and engineering processes.
  • Knowledge of documentation processes and ideas/examples of what makes great developer and API documentation.
  • Experience creating content strategies.
  • Experience with creating documentation in an Agile development environment
  • Impeccable spelling, grammar and overall writing skills, with the ability to self-edit and to edit the work of others.
  • The ability to spot complex technical issues between teams, business areas and processes and to suggest fixes for them.
  • Natural and original writing style.
  • Ability to think creatively.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Calm and quick thinking skills.
