Job Description

Are you ready to rise to the challenge of climate change with the team that will deliver? Form Energy is a U.S. technology and manufacturing company that is developing and commercializing pioneering energy storage technologies to enable the electric grid to run on 100% renewable energy, every day of the year.
Supported by leading investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ArcelorMittal, TPG Rise, MIT’s The Engine, and others, we share a common belief that low-cost, multi-day energy storage is the key to enable tomorrow’s zero carbon electric grid. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, we are deeply motivated and inspired to create a better world. We need talented, hardworking individuals who share our goal of tackling the challenge of climate change. Do you want to work with us today to build a better tomorrow?
Role DescriptionWe are seeking an experienced chemical or materials engineer to join the Advanced Manufacturing team. This team is responsible for developing the novel processes used for manufacturing iron electrodes to be deployed in Form Energy’s first commercial product. In this role, you will build and own chemical process models related to the production of custom iron materials tailored for battery use. This will involve theoretical and empirical studies aimed at optimizing trades between cost, technical risk, and battery product performance. You will also  dive into critical mechanistic exploration including data analysis, literature review, and design of experiments.
This role provides an exciting opportunity to develop novel processing technology while doing your part to help combat climate change! You will collaborate with a diversity of teams inside and outside the company, including supply chain, operations, facilities, and external consultants to achieve overall manufacturing success.  As the team works toward a common goal of manufacturing high performance electrodes, expect to become deeply entrenched in the intersection space of equipment design, process engineering, and materials engineering,
Steel/iron industry experience is a plus; battery experience is not required.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop predictive models for iron processing operations and material property manipulation based on theoretical and empirical data.
  • Model complex, multiphase reaction systems using a combination of approaches, including equilibrium and kinetics based approximations.
  • Identify, design and validate process unit operations to de-risk the production of battery-grade iron at large scale.
  • Develop and refine cost models to inform techno-economic analysis.
  • Collaborate with R&D and manufacturing engineers to specify experiments that inform and validate the process models.
  • Work with a diversity of teams inside and outside the company to achieve overall manufacturing success.
  • Be a lead-by-example champion for safety. Participate in hazard analysis sessions for the development of new equipment and processes.

What You'll Bring:

  • BS in Chemical, Material, or Metallurgical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in an industrial or R&D setting.
  • An in-depth knowledge of solid-gas chemical reactions (thermodynamics and kinetics), fluid mechanics and heat transfer is mandatory.
  • A high degree of self-motivation, organization, and attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Ability to analyze, summarize and visualize data, reach sound conclusions and drive decision making. Experience using statistical methods for making process development is a plus.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with cross-functional teams and external partners, from plant operators to executives, both verbally and written.
