About You

You’re a passionate campaigner with a track record of designing communications and campaign strategies that achieve real world impact. You’re a big picture systems thinker who understands the power of narrative and how a wide range of communications, organizing, and campaign tools can combine to achieve large scale system change. You also have a deep understanding of the complex US media landscape and how this landscape can be harnessed in different ways to affect corporate targets and sociopolitical dynamics to change what is possible. You have a knack for synthesizing complex issues into relevant and compelling stories with resonance across a range of audiences.  

You don’t need to be an expert in finance or banking but you’ve got a top level understanding of how to influence powerful corporate targets, how to build grassroots power, and the role civil society can play in driving that change through campaigns and communications. 

You’re a team player with a collaborative mindset, excellent interpersonal communication skills, and experience in managing joint communications strategies alongside allies and partners. 

About The Role

This role will develop and execute on communications and media strategies to shift the biggest banks in the US away from funding fossil fuels.

This role sits within the Global banks team and will help contribute to the global strategy. We support networks of organizations to work together to achieve outcomes that would not be possible by individual organizations acting alone. This role will actively support the capacity building of these networks and partner organizations. This role will serve as a communications-focused counterpart to the current US Banks Senior Strategist. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures communications goals are integrated across all stages of strategic decision making and program planning in the US banks program.

  • Works with allies and partners to develop and execute shared communications and campaign strategies that challenge intransigent corporate targets.

  • Determines the targeted audiences and channels that we should prioritize to achieve our campaign goals and creates campaign frames, messages, and talking points that are most compelling to those audiences.

  • Builds and maintains key relationships and strategic partnerships with journalists and editors .

  • Monitors dominant sociopolitical narratives and identifies new opportunities for messaging and framing our issues accordingly. 

  • Manages all components of US banks communications strategies and projects including budgets, deliverables, and partner coordination.

Required skills and experience    

  • At least <7 years experience in a similar or related role including unpaid, grassroots or lived experience

  • A collaborative mindset and a track record of working effectively in alliance with diverse stakeholders

  • A sophisticated understanding of power and campaign strategy, and the ability to turn high-level strategy into actionable campaigns and communications plans

  • Proven ability to prepare and execute creative and effective communications strategies including earned, paid, and social media

  • Strong writing and editing skills, with an ability to understand and analyze complex policy issues and communicate them clearly to targeted audiences

  • Media relations experience including pitching and landing top-tier media

  • A passion for action on climate change and a commitment to social justice

Desirable Skills and Experience   

  • Experience working in US-based organizing and movement spaces;

  • Experience working on issues of racial, economic, and/or worker justice

  • Proven project management skills including proficiency in managing budgets, delivering on timelines, coordinating plans across partners and allies
