Job Description

Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.

We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.

Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

This is a software engineering role for the Hosted Data team.

We are building a platform for our customers to create and share Geospatial Data. We aim to support our customers to create the insights they need, then share and publish those insights in the manner most appropriate to their use-cases.

We write our back-end services in Go using open source libraries and store our data in modern, cloud-hosted databases. We write front-end services using React and OpenLayers, but with a wide margin for creativity and experimentation when possible. We package our code into Docker images and run them on Kubernetes infrastructure maintained by a separate, dedicated team.

Our team is small, focused, and distributed remotely throughout North America. Our work hours, sprint routine, communication tools, and team responsibilities are very flexible to suit our remote-friendly, family-friendly needs.

Impact You’ll Own:

  • Help design and build back-end services in Go
  • Collaborate with the team to review pull requests, write tests, and deploy code
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for our production services
  • Help design and build front-end experiences using React or other similar technologies
  • Build new services and features to support Planet’s growing platform
  • Help to define, create and analyze usage metrics to drive customer growth

What You Bring:

  • Full stack application development experience (Database, Services, Web)
  • Fluency in Go, PostGreSQL, React & Material UI or related technologies
  • Experience with DevOps, K8s, Docker, GCP
  • Experience designing and evolving public-facing APIs
  • Curiosity, Innovation, Collaboration
  • Experience scaling and maintaining production systems
  • 3+ years industry experience, though not all of it needs to be in Go

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Versatility: the ability to pick up new technologies quickly
  • Experience with geospatial technologies and data (Cloud-optimized Geotiffs, Geojson, STAC, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, ESRI services, Earth Engine, Sentinel Hub, XYZ tile servers, OGC services, gdal, rasterio, etc)
  • Positive attitude, excitement about Planet’s mission, easy to work with
  • Passion for things outside of work: Are you a rock climber? Pilot? SCUBA Diver? Machinist? Musician? Dog-lover? Volunteer? Tell us what makes you tick!

Benefits While Working at Planet:

  • Comprehensive Health Plan
  • Wellness program and onsite massages in specific offices
  • Flexible Time Off
  • Recognition Programs
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Learning and Tuition Reimbursement
  • Parental Leave
  • Offsites and Happy Hours
  • Volunteering Benefits
