Spring 2023 Energy Market Data Analysis Internship – Clean Energy Program’s FERC Team

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”) team of Earthjustice’s Clean Energy Program is seeking an undergraduate student for one part -time energy market data analysis internship during spring 2023. This is a paid position. This is a remote role, but the successful candidate may have the opportunity to visit the Earthjustice office nearest them.

The FERC team’s work focuses on litigation and advocacy in FERC’s forum. FERC is a federal agency that governs several activities that are integral to the nation’s ability to transition to 100% clean energy grid. FERC has jurisdiction over interstate transmission planning and wholesale sales of electricity, which is transacted through wholesale electricity markets in various regions across the nation. The FERC team identifies litigation and advocacy opportunities for removing market barriers preventing renewable generators from participating in the wholesale electricity markets and calling out gas generators that are manipulating the markets to avoid retirement. The team is also working on cases that will help reform the way grid operators manage the grid so that they can harness the strengths of renewable resources to keep the grid stable. 

The objective of the internship is for the intern to gather, quantify, and analyze a variety energy industry data on a regional and national basis so that the FERC team can gauge the impact of their work.  

Responsibilities: 

Under the supervision of FERC Team’s Deputy Managing Attorney (DMA) or designee, the intern will perform the following responsibilities: 

• Understand the strategic goals for the FERC team as set forth in Earthjustice’s Fiscal Year 23 Programmatic Strategic Plan
• Develop an understanding of the activities that FERC regulates.
• Learn the proceedings in which the team is currently engaged.
• Determine the which data is relevant to quantifying the impact that the team’s work could have on specific regions of the country and on specific issues.
• Gather the data that is determined to be relevant to this project
• Analyze the relevant data and draft a memo, in collaboration with the DMA, that provides recommendations for how the team should focus its time.

 Qualifications: 

• Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.
• Preference will be given to those with a joint political science and economics focus.
• Must be available a minimum of 15-20 hours per week.
• Passion for the environment and commitment to environmental advocacy are essential.
• Outstanding analytical and research skills.
• Awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.

Compensation: 

Internships at Earthjustice include a stipend. The total stipend amount will be calculated when the length of the internship is determined.
