Job Description

Lumen Energy is automating clean energy deployment across the built environment.
The scope of the opportunity is massive: the roughly 6 million commercial buildings in the US are responsible for 16% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Most of them could save money and reduce emissions with solar, yet fewer than 4% have solar in place today.
We leverage software and data science to uncover the economically ideal “clean energy stack” for every building. Next, we make clean energy deployment widely accessible by abstracting away the complexity of an underlying marketplace of installers, financiers and confusing electrical jargon, creating a delightful, software driven experience for customers to simply click to deploy clean energy.
While this is an audacious scope, we believe that the combination of our powerful clean energy pricing engine, together with the end-to-end tools for deploying and managing clean energy, will unlock the clean energy transition from vision to action in commercial real estate.
About you
You are an experienced software engineer. You thrive on ownership and enjoy collaborating with teammates to turn bright ideas into excellent software products. While you understand how to build systems that scale, you also understand the tradeoff between technical debt and speed. You're comfortable making tough decisions. You care deeply about your teammates and may have served as a technical lead or engineering manager, and have a desire to manage and help your teammates. Above all, you're looking for a role where you can grow quickly and begin or accelerate your journey into management.
About the Role
We are an experienced, growing engineering team. As we look to add more teammates over the coming year, this will be our first engineering role with management responsibilities. You will be a software engineer first, but be responsible for managing a small number of teammates and there is plenty of room to grow as the company does.
Who We Are
We are a small team of scientists, engineers, designers and entrepreneurs committed to powering our world with clean energy.  We build on experience at Stripe, Google X, Shopify, and US national labs.  While we're early in our journey, we are live with customers, funded by exceptional investors (soon to be announced), and looking to bring on a core team member who can help us expand our impact.
We are a remote-first company, but get together regularly in San Francisco and are looking for teammates who work within 3 time zones of Pacific Time.

Responsibilities

  • Helping to build the engine that allows us to automatically evaluate the economic potential of a building for on-site energy
  • Building out our multi-sided user-facing platform for building owners, tenants, installers and financiers to orchestrate a complicated process with intuitive software
  • Collaborating with data scientists at Lumen and national laboratories to implement data models to predict energy use, utility costs, building characteristics, and potential savings
  • Integrating with an emerging suite of software tools and APIs to further our modeling capabilities
  • Technologies we use: Python, Flask, Javascript, React, NextJS, GraphQL, Google App Engine/Google Cloud Platform

Your Experience

  • 5+ years building software applications and comfortable building in Python
  • Ready to take on a high level of responsibility as part of a small team that moves quickly

  • Nice to haves
  • Experience managing data pipelines and deploying ML models
  • Comfort with Docker and managing CI pipelines
  • Familiarity with GIS tools and techniques

We are proud to be an equal opportunity workplace committed to building a team culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
