Senior Engineer, Database (remote)

As a member of the Aspiration Architecture Team you’ll use your technical expertise and delivery experience to help launch new products successfully and improve existing products You’ll look for opportunities to improve software development process, and application infrastructure. You’ll collaborate with like minded staff-plus peers and set high standards for quality, efficiency, and collaboration within the engineering team. You’ll also mentor other engineers on their tech and professional skills, lead by example, and lend career progression advice.

What You'll Do

• As a Senior Engineer, Database you’ll focus on the core, platform schemas, queries, and databases of our service data layer.
• For new products you’ll engineer, review, and improve RDBMS schema for performance and structure according to specifications.
• You’ll collaborate with and mentor engineers on query engineering, slow query EXPLAINs, and database design best practices.
• You'll work with devops on database parameter tuning, version upgrades, replication, and provisioning.
• You’ll also be as (or more) excited about mentoring other engineers at what you do as doing it yourself.
• You’ll also follow industry technology innovations that Aspiration may adopt to create competitive, productive, or operational advantage.
• You’ll have permission granted to experiment, demonstrate, and evangelize what you find of value.
• You may also find opportunities to publish results of explorations and innovations publicly, via Aspiration’s engineering blog (under construction) or conference proceedings.

What You'll Bring

• 6+ years of experience designing and implementing complex database schemas and sql queries.
• 4+ years of experience as Staff or Principal specializing or focused on data layer performance and scale.
• Expert at query planning and SQL EXPLAIN engineering.
• Experience with Postgres, including internals (WAL, index types, etc.)
• Experience with Database parameter tuning.
• Knowledge of the broad offerings of cloud based data services, especially on AWS.
• Knowledge of No-SQL and cache servers, pros and cons for application implementation.
• A mindset that goes beyond delivering tickets: finding and delivering engineering business value through yourself and others.

Bonus Points

• Leadership skills with experience mentoring Jr/Mid-level developers.
• Experience with the full web stack performance optimization techniques.
• Fluency with the full software development lifecycle using Agile methodologies.
