Protein Biochemist

At Modern Meadow (MM) we are harnessing the power of design, biology and material science to produce high performing, sustainable, and scalable bio-based products. As we continue to grow, we are seeking to hire a bench level Scientist with expertise in protein purification and characterization.

Responsibilities:

• Work within the biochemistry team to develop, and optimize downstream recovery and purification processes using a strong fundamental understanding of process and protein fundamentals.
• Independently, identify and develop procedures for purification of proteins from various organisms using a variety of methods, while continuously considering process scalability.
• Characterize proteins using a variety of biochemical and biophysical techniques to improve recovery and purification processes by leveraging better understanding of relevant protein properties.
• Enjoys working at the bench for majority of the time and able to communicate scientific findings within cross-functional team meetings.
• Collaborate with the bioprocess engineering team to implement and scale-up the developed purification processes.
• Provide mentorship and knowledge to junior scientists and research associates and help them in developing and achieving project as well as career goals. 

Requirements:

• Strong scientific background in protein purification and characterization with hands-on laboratory experience in the biochemical and biophysical characterization of proteins is required.
• Goal-oriented, highly adaptable and able to work effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment is required.
• Ability to think outside the box with regards to protein purification and provide innovative solutions towards solving complex purification, process and scaleup problems.
• Must have extensive experience with protein purification on column (SEC, IEC, HIC, Affinity etc.) as well as unconventional methods such as Aqueous Two-Phase Systems.
• Must have expertise in AKTA and similar purification systems. 
• Is knowledgeable and has a good understanding of protein engineering and enzymology concepts, so that she/he is able to effectively work with our experts in those fields.
• Familiarity with high-throughput protein purification is a plus.
• Experience with process scale-up is a plus.

Education Requirements: 

• A PhD in Bioprocess Engineering/Biochemical Engineering with a focus on protein process development.
• A PhD in Biochemistry/Biophysics, with proven experience in process development (with relevant industry experience).
• Or related fields with relevant experience.
