Job Description

The ocean is critical to human and planetary health —but ocean health is in rapid and accelerating decline. We believe that we have the responsibility —and ability —to act.
Running Tide is a global ocean health company. Our fast-growing, multidisciplinary teams of world-class scientists, engineers, and maritime operators, design and implement interventions that rebalance Earth’s carbon cycle, decarbonize global supply chains, restore marine ecosystems, and revitalize coastal communities. Our corporate operations, business development, communications, and policy teams support Running Tide’s front-line workers in scaling our interventions to tackle humanity’s most urgent challenges: restoring ocean health and combating climate change.
We’re looking for a Vice President of Hardware Engineering to provide leadership and mentorship for Running Tide’s engineering teams.

You Will:

  • Manage a growing staff of mechanical and electrical engineers and technicians who are working on a broad array of ocean-facing hardware projects in a cross-disciplinary effort with software engineers and data scientists. Provide mentorship, skill building, and guidance. Create frameworks for managing constraints and tradeoffs between design, manufacturability, and test.
  • Collaborate with other senior technical leadership to develop a robust and flexible engineering organization at Running Tide. Establish and sustain industrial best practices while applying new and relevant methods to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Put in place a product development process and drive adoption.
  • Provide technical guidance and strategic oversight in planning, design, and development at scale of all processes and systems, including each system’s ongoing operation and improvement.
  • Work to build a strong team and culture. Contribute to technical recruiting efforts. Ensure the optimal application of engineering resources, trading off internal and external (contractors, consultants, outsourcing) resources.
  • Participate on Running Tide’s IP committee and contribute to building out our patent portfolio.
  • Define the handoff / interface between engineering and operations, fabrication, and manufacturing at Running Tide.

You Are (or You Have):

  • A highly skilled engineer, having worked in world class hardware or manufacturing organizations. Seasoned in both the science and the “art” of engineering. Comfortable making decisions, negotiating tradeoffs, and adapting solutions to complex problems.
  • An effective technical communicator; able to speak, write, and draw your intent. You expect to engage in solution-oriented and ego-free collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
  • An experienced and empathetic manager. Have built and led large engineering teams, appreciate the value of soft skill building, and have already learned most of the hard lessons.
  • Data-driven and bias for action.
  • 8-10+ years in a similar role.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience building hardware for an ocean environment.

Expected Compensation Range: $180,000-200,000 USD per year + equity
Our teams operate with utmost persistence. We are tackling the world’s most difficult and important problems, and we are unwavering in our motivation to find a solution. At our core, we are innovators driven to do "more good" rather than "less bad" in the world.
Running Tide is committed to building a diverse team, bringing as many possible perspectives to bear on the unprecedented challenges facing our planet. We are committed to building an inclusive environment where people of all backgrounds  can come to do their best work.
All offers of employment at Running Tide are contingent upon clear results of a thorough background check.
