At Wisk, we're transforming the future of urban mobility through safe, all-electric, autonomous flight. We are a passionate team working together toward a sustainable future, solving high-impact problems that have never been solved before. By delivering everyday flight for everyone, we're making it possible to spend less time getting there and more time being there. If you want to be part of shaping the future of mobility, then read on!
We are looking for a Sr. Staff Mass Properties Engineer to join our Flight Physics team. The Mass Properties Engineer will help with the design, flight testing and certification of current and future Wisk eVTOL aircraft. In this role, you will develop tools to estimate, track,  and validate aircraft weight and mass property estimates. Additionally, you will collaborate with multiple other disciplines to monitor and control weight and balance of Wisk aircraft.

What you will do:

  • Work with manufacturing, structural, loads and design engineers to identify and champion weight savings opportunities throughout all design phases, including aircraft structure, propulsion and battery systems, passenger compartment and flight control components
  • Perform Mass Properties requirements definition
  • Review designs and provide suggestions for weight efficiency improvements
  • Establish mass properties processes for the entire aircraft and its subsystems
  • Provide consistency in means and methods of estimating and evaluating weights, cg, and inertias
  • Develop and improve tools to automate weight, cg, and inertia estimation and tracking
  • Develop processes, best practices and guidance on tracking mass risks and opportunities
  • Improve estimation and accounting for items of mass that are often forgotten or are difficult to estimate such as sealant, primer, paint, fasteners, etc.
  • Provide guidance on mass properties fidelity/confidence throughout different phases of the program
  • Perform detailed analysis to ensure hardware meets all weight, mass properties, and inertia estimates.
  • Support physical weighing of parts and assemblies and correlation to weight estimates
  • Estimate, develop and verify weight, center-of-gravity and inertia assessments of detail parts, sub-assemblies, assemblies and the final products using the principles of mathematics, geometry, statics, and computer aided three-dimensional interactive analysis (CATIA) and measuring equipment.
  • Support flight test mass properties requirements

What you have done:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant discipline
  • 10+ years of experience doing detailed Mass Properties analysis on fixed wing aircraft and/or rotorcraft
  • You have worked on various aircraft researching, planning, analyzing and measuring designs and hardware for system weight, inertia, and center of gravity.
  • You have experience with CAD software (preferably NX) and are familiar with compiling relevant mass properties data and automating mass properties workflows
  • You have developed tools to automate mass properties data reduction and analysis
  • You have tracked mass properties for multiple aircraft configurations simultaneously and maintained configuration control
  • Experienced with scripting languages and simulation tools (e.g. Fortran, Python, MATLAB)

Desired:

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant discipline
  • 12+ years of experience doing detailed Mass Properties analysis on fixed wing aircraft and/or rotorcraft
  • Knowledge of electric powered tilt-rotor aircraft and their associated weight uncertainty sources
  • Experience developing custom tools and scripting (VBA, Python, SQL, Matlab) for Mass Properties tracking and analysis
  • Prior weight experience with flight test support and development activities with evolving configuration changes
  • Familiarity with relevant aerospace standards and mass properties control best practices (SAWE, FAA, ASTM, NASA)
  • Familiarity with NX CAD Software

Who you are:

  • You are a highly motivated, self starting individual with a broad set of skills and never afraid of facing complex technical challenges
  • You are a solution oriented individual with a strong analytical mindset
  • You have strong communication skills and can easily tailor your communications to suit the audience
  • You can adapt quickly or propose changes needed to achieve early results in a timely fashion
  • You embrace challenges and take commitments and deliver results within reasonable expectations
  • You are a positive team player
