Job Description

Boston Government Services has an open Marine Energy Controls and Codesign Numerical Modeling Position.

This position will help directly support the Department of Energy’s (DOE) office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) marine energy foundational R&D portfolio. Information on the Foundational R&D portfolio can be found in the WPTO Multiyear Program Plan (MYPP) found here (https://www.energy.gov/sites/default/files/2022-03/wpto-mypp-2022-1.pdf), beginning on page 93. This position involves activities, including, but not limited to, Funding Opportunity Announcements, project management, and technical support for competitively selected cooperative agreements. Support involves daily interactions with internal parties such as legal, contracting, NEPA, and communications, as well as external communication with project recipients in academia, private industry, and National Laboratories.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Review Marine Energy research projects to date in controls, codesign, and numerical modeling to include but not limited to MHK software gaps, patent review, and SPA modeling key issues paper.
  • Review externally funded projects - MHK research projects to date in controls, codesign, and numerical modeling.
  • Deliver summary report on state of the art based on project review and literature review.
  • Elicit feedback from industry experts.
  • Develop draft strategy for controls / codesign and a separate draft strategy for

Required Qualifications:

  • Formal Ph.D. coursework in controls theory, or 10 plus years of industry experience applying controls theory in robotics or industrial applications.
  • Numerical modeling experience.
  • Systems optimization experience.
  • Testing experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Successful drug screening.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Controls experience or Ph.D. coursework in:
    • electrical generation.
    • high-torque, low-speed electrical generation.
    • numerical modeling.
  • Experience with renewable energy generation.
  • Experience with codesigning controls system with the overall system.
  • Coursework or experience in ocean wave mechanics.
  • Familiarity with some of the software in the PRIMRE.org code catalog https://openei.org/wiki/PRIMRE/Code_Catalog.
  • Peer-reviewed publications on controls, codesign, or numerical modeling topics.
  • Wave tank testing experience.

Salary Range: $80-110,000
