Job Description

Our Mission

At SPAN, we are building products to enable the rapid adoption of renewable energy. As more distributed energy resources like solar and storage come onto the grid, it’s increasingly important to be able to improve the technology that sits between the grid, the home, and those distributed energy resources. SPAN’s smart panel replaces the electrical panel to become the center for connected power in the home.  With SPAN, homeowners receive all the safety features of a standard panel with revolutionary insights and edge-of-grid controls through our mobile app.

The Role

SPAN’s hardware group is seeking an enthusiastic and driven embedded electronics engineer to support the development of our next generation of products that drive home electrification. As embedded engineer you will be responsible for the compute hardware plus associated control circuity through all stages of the product’s lifecycle. In this role, candidates will drive efforts to advance and optimize our partners' power systems integrated with SPAN’s panel and collaborate with software, firmware, controls, and mechanical teams to implement technologies that electrify the home and delight our customers. Candidates should be comfortable and excited collaborating with a team of highly skilled embedded systems and magnetics-focused electrical engineers to advance SPAN’s product portfolio.

In this role, you will:

  • Be responsible for the design, development, production, testing, and maintenance of embedded systems.

  • Work with electrical engineers and firmware engineers to create embedded systems and drive the design of the compute platform and its periphery to ensure that hardware functions and software features are implemented.

  • Collaborate with product and engineering team to conceive embedded solutions based on specifications and current & future needs.

  • Work with contract manufacturers throughout the full product lifecycle to ensure parts are made to specification and achieve our standards for product quality and yield.

About You

Required Qualifications

We are seeking an experienced embedded systems engineer who has:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering

  • 5+ years experience developing embedded electronic systems in the automotive, energy, or aerospace industries.

  • Subject Matter Expert level experience in Software & Hardware Integration

  • Experience being responsible for all aspects of the electrical design of an Embedded System including high-speed digital and communication busses, power management, PCB layouts and thermal management.

  • Experience collaborating with algorithm and software teams to define and implement high-performance computing platforms.

  • Experience supervising PCB layout for minimal stray inductance and capacitance, placement strategies for better manufacturability, power/signal plane definition and EMC optimization.

  • Programming experience in (Python, C or C++), knowledge of different communications protocols, interfaces and hardware subsystems

Bonus Qualifications

We would love to hire someone who has:

  • MSEE or PhD in Electrical Engineering with significant industry experience in embedded systems.

  • Experience specifying embedded controllers for power electronics – i.e. choosing between FPGA, microcontroller, hardware accelerated gate drive, etc.

  • Experience in embedded systems design with preemptive, multitasking, or real-time operating systems.

  • Knowledge of environmental, reliability, and safety requirements for residential and commercial power applications. Knowledge of national and international safety and EMC requirements relevant to the design of power converters such as UL, FCC, National Electric Code (NEC), IEC, and ISO.

  • Demonstrated success working in a cross disciplinary, multi-cultural environment.

  • Experience with embedded programming including working with / guiding firmware developers.

The U.S. base salary range for this position is $127,000 - $173,000 plus benefits, equity and variable compensation for Sales-related roles. This range represents SPAN’s good faith estimate of competitively-priced salary for the role based on national, real-time industry data from companies of a similar growth stage.
