Shellfish Hatchery Technician

We are seeking a full-time shellfish hatchery technician, with the training and experience in core disciplines relevant to spawning and rearing oyster, clam, and scallop larvae and spat. This candidate should have a strong understanding of the biological and physical processes that drive the intensive cultivation shellfish in early life stages.
The hatchery technician will have the opportunity to work across all systems throughout the hatchery facility including the broodstock/spawning room, larval culture systems, spat culture systems, algae culture systems, and laboratory space. This is a full-time position, and the employee will work closely with the hatchery Assistant Manager, Hatchery Manager, and Senior Biologist. 

You Will:

• Routinely clean culture systems (tanks, plumbing), and adult broodstock oysters
• Consistently monitor system water quality and perform routine water quality tests
• Maintain system filtration and replacement of consumable components as needed
• Assist with oyster spawns and successful fertilization
• Examine and quantify eggs and larvae, daily
• Examine and quantify algae cell counts, daily
• Drain larvae tanks and subsequent grading/thinning of larvae
• Administer and monitor algae production and feedings
• Ensure successful setting of oyster larvae in spat culture systems
• Consistent, detailed and diligent record keeping in keeping with discharge regulations

You Are (or You Have):

• A degree in marine biology/ecology, aquaculture, aquatic chemistry, or another related field
• Able to work well independently, and as part of a team
• Self-motivated and well organized
• Good time management skills and multi-tasking abilities
• A general knowledge of aquaculture
• Able to complete repetitive tasks with a consistent level of efficiency/quality
• Good communication and data collection/management skills
• Able to lift 50 lbs on occasion, and work on feet in a physically challenging environment
• Proficiency with Microsoft suite of office applications
• At least 1 year prior experience in an aquaculture production facility 

This position also requires a flexible work schedule that sometimes varies in the number of hours worked in a day, or in which the stop and start times in a day may vary. This may include working at any hour of the day (in the case of water quality/mechanical emergency), and workdays in excess of eight hours. The employee must also be able to work weekends on a rotating schedule.
