Program& Project Overview:  

RMI is seeking exceptional candidates to fill a Manager position within RMI’s Carbon-Free Buildings Program. Our Buildings Program seeks to eliminate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from U.S. residential and commercial buildings by 2045 through a range of tactical market engagements, policy advocacy, thought leadership, and demonstration projects focused on maximizing the adoption of efficiency, electrification, grid interactivity, and low embodied carbon materials. 

Specifically, this individual will work directly on the following project teams:  

  • Finance work within the Carbon Free Buildings Team: Ensuring equitable financing solutions are available to enact energy solutions at scale across the buildings sector is a key step to garnering greater adoption of low-carbon tools and technologies. As new financing tools arise, including by way of grants, incentives, and tax credits from the recent passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, our team works with city, state, local governments, and community stakeholders to explore how that capital can be best be leveraged, especially prioritizing traditionally underserved and marginalized communities.  
  • Finance the Future: RMI’s Finance the Future (FTF) initiative aims to increase the availability of capital for home energy and resilience improvements in addition to promoting transparency of home energy performance in the home purchase process. By promoting innovative financing mechanisms, FTF works with key mortgage market and housing actors to explore opportunities to incorporating home energy use into underwriting practices, especially at the point of sale, improve access to higher-quality building stock, and generate substantial savings for all homeowners of varying income levels. 
  • Benchmarking & Labeling: Benchmarking current market analytics and performance is key to identifying which properties could benefit most from efficiency and resilience upgrades, and our analytics team is key to leading technical and engineering aspects of efficiency programs and policies. Specifically, our analytics team works to develop energy use and demand savings estimates, energy modeling scenarios, code and standard evaluations, and verification of emerging technologies.  

Position Overviewand Responsibilities: 

Our Managers are creative project leaders who mentor and manage team members to craft visionary-yet-practical solutions for the energy transition. As a Manager at RMI, you will be a primary project manager, and work closely with and under the direction of RMI’s Principals and Managing Directors to design and execute projects. Specific responsibilities will evolve over time as needed to support the institute's goals and will likely include managing junior staff in research and analysis projects and facilitating collaborative multi-stakeholder convenings.   

Primary job functions:  

  • Oversee finance-related projects and initiatives within the Carbon-Free Buildings Program with the majority of their time.   
  • Support collaborative work that the Carbon-Free Buildings team is conducting
  • Shape project strategies from inception to conclusion.  
  • Act as the lead relationship manager with project partners and stakeholders.  
  • Coach and motivate project team members and resolve any issues throughout with RMI’s Climate Aligned Finance team with any remaining time. 
  • Oversee teams that number between 2 to 15+ contributors (internal and external).
  • Regularly contribute and lead external interviews, videos, and publications to share project insights.  
  • Work hand-in-hand with our development team to develop funding strategies.  
  • Lead and contribute to research efforts and publications.  
  • Represent RMI as an industry expert at key conferences and other public speaking events.  

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s level degree, equivalent, or higher, in sustainability, environment, finance, economics, engineering, or energy-related discipline  
  • At least 5+ years of direct relevant experience of professional experience in fields related to the built environment and/or building finance  
  • Experience with real estate finance, including equity investment, mortgage lending, secondary markets, and/or project financing 
  • Experience leading teams, mentoring junior staff, and managing complex project portfolios  
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills  
  • Experience designing and managing complex analytical models  
  • A passion for working collaboratively to advance market-based solutions to climate change  
  • A strong drive to advance equitable building decarbonization, especially across historically marginalized and underserved communities.  
  • Excellent time management, organization, entrepreneurship, and drive  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with building science, building energy systems, design, engineering, or similar technical field.
  • Background working directly with senior-level stakeholders from industry, finance, or other areas, especially relating to energy/carbon goals. 
  • Experience with donor development or managing grant- and donor design, engineering, or similar technical field   from industry, finance, or other areas, especially relating to energy/carbon goals  driven projects. 
  • Experience with group facilitation and workshop design.

Location:

We are a remote-ready company with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our U.S. offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado, and Basalt, Colorado. This role can be located from anywhere in the continental United States. 

We provide you with the essential IT equipment plus a one-time home technology payment and a monthly work from home/commuter allowance to ensure you have a comfortable home office set up and necessary supplies. 

We love seeing each other in person! We occasionally gather for shared time together like retreats and learning experiences. Be ready to travel for occasional in-person meetings (and of course, we cover travel costs). Some roles may require more travel, which will be discussed during the hiring process.

Compensation:

RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Managers join at the minimum to mid salary range of $103,000 - $121,000. You would also have an additional 10% bonus target!
