Overall Function

Environmental Defense Fund is seeking an HBCU Liaison Manager, Community Engagement. The HBCU Liaison Manager is responsible for implementing an HBCU strategic organizing plan, as well as refine our co-creation strategy, with key partners like the Deep South Center HBCU-CBO Gulf Coast Equity Consortium, South Carolina State Climate Investment Fund, the Robert D. Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice, Air Alliance Houston, Rise St. James, and Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services, among others. Our ideal candidate is a strategic, visionary, community, and policy-oriented advocate who is passionate about justice and equity.  They would have work experience and background in environmental justice and equity related to transportation or infrastructure planning and projects, and with other sectors such as climate, water, energy, and community planning. The HBCU Liaison Manager reports to the Senior Manager, Community Engagement. This position requires an individual with a can-do attitude who understands how to get things done in a large, complex organization through influence and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • With support from the Senior Manager, Community Engagement, develop and implement an HBCU strategic organizing plan, as well as refine our co-creation strategy, with key external partners.

  • Management and oversight of the EDF +Biz student management investment fund project in partnership with EDF +Biz, including but not limited to timelines, goals, tasks, and outcomes.

  • Partner with EDF +Biz team to execute the EDF-proposed Beauty Justice initiative.

  • Identify, build, and maintain partnerships with stakeholders, including but not limited to HBCUs, priority communities, equity advisory councils, agencies, advocacy groups, community-based and grassroots organizations, and the general public.

  • Plan and facilitate stakeholder discussions, group meetings, workshops and events, and internal working groups and teams, in-person and using virtual collaborative technologies. 

  • Research topics, analyze complex information, and write and synthesize surveys, meeting actions and outcomes, and public feedback, for many types of audiences (including environmental justice communities, business groups, elected officials, etc.).

  • Draft and edit training guides, training presentations, memos, templates, toolkits, text scripts, emails, and social media content to engage with HBCU communities to maximize impact.

  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

  • Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, and 6 years’ relevant work experience (non-direct) in community/civic engagement or the social sciences. Climate/environment focus is preferred. A Master’s may substitute for 2 years’ experience, a PhD may substitute for 4 years’ experience.

  • Excellent project management skills.

  • Strong familiarity with the current climate policy landscape and demonstrated ability to intersect domestic social, business, and community issues with climate policy.

  • Expertise in navigating intersecting issues, including but not limited to, climate policy, public health, business investment, clean energy, workforce development, equity, and/or environmental justice.

  • Familiarity with student-aligned initiatives such as investment funds, business, and innovation on university campuses.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct rigorous research and complex technical analysis and translate said research in economic, regulatory, scientific, and civic community.

  • Highly proficient in distributed organizing or building networks.

  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.

  • Committed to equity, racial justice, authentic communications, standing up for impacted communities, and continual learning.

  • Outstanding oral, written, and presentation skills – including storytelling and narrative creation, and the ability to listen and target communication to specific interests of varied audiences.

  • Passionate about climate justice and environmental protection and empowered by the thought of convincing local, state and federal governments to make meaningful and lasting solutions through a community co-creation process.

  • Adept at representing EDF in coalition settings with multiple internal and external stakeholders, including frontline communities.

  • Superior skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and/or Canva.

  • Highly proficient and comfortable using various social media tools including, but not limited to, twitter, TikTok, and Instagram.

  • Must be proactive and a strong team player and collaborator, while at the same time able to work independently.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

The pay range for this role is 82,000 - 91,000 USD which takes into account factors such as candidate experience, skills, training, internal team equity and local norms.
