Job Description

Bend supply chains towards resiliency and impact: solve for crucial issues in the world’s most challenging environments.

DESCRIPTION

MACRO-EYES is recruiting an Optimization Scientist. This role will involve design/build of optimization models for our core product and deployment specific work, designing how our technology engages networks in the real world. Save lives; put a dent in climate change; enable organizations to do more with less; have a purpose.

MACRO-EYES is a venture-backed technology company shifting the supply chain line of sight, making it possible for supply and demand networks to respond precisely to what will come next, rather than what already occurred. The first major investment in AI by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was in MACRO-EYES; today our technology works for corporations and governments across 10+ countries – slashing waste and saving lives. We create more from less by making pervasive systems intelligent. We are working towards a world where nothing is wasted and where each resource generates the greatest impact.

Join a diverse, talented, international Machine Learning team led by our Chief Scientist and MIT professor Suvrit Sra. We constantly face challenges beyond the limits of known theory and models. You will co-build the first product to make supply chains truly predictive - enabling organizations to decarbonize and do far more good with the resources they have. You will create transformative solutions the world has never seen – end-to-end ML+Optimization that forms products, deployed globally to make supply chains capable of auto-calibrating against risk and opportunity. Real science and real-world impact. Lives lie in the balance. The ideal candidate will be excited by the fact that the work we will do together is largely without precedent.

Why now?

Crisis forces change. Global supply chains are fracturing. Organizations realize that supply chains must decarbonize while becoming more resilient in the face of accelerating change. We believe that double-digit rates of unnecessary wastage (from logistics to manufacturing to allocation) to ensure products on shelves is unsustainable. We believe many global development challenges or as much allocation problems as they are resourcing problems. The time is now to redesign supply chains. We’ve shown it’s possible to automate the precision matching of supply to demand in some of the most challenging settings on earth. Today we serve some of the most demanding customers in the world. It’s time to scale.

Requirements

Fierce drive to use optimization for meaningful change is the most important characteristic you bring. Complement that with a solid background in ML, good knowledge of statistics, along with experience in working with real-world (messy) data. Desire to publish is a plus. Demonstrated ability to make meaningful contributions that resonate in the real world to efforts with an open-ended research flavor is valuable.

  • PhD in industrial engineering, operations research, operations management, management sciences or in a quantitative field
  • Solid understanding of machine learning and statistics
  • Desire to continually learn and grow; open-mindedness
  • Think in terms of data, not just algorithms.
  • Hands on experience in developing optimization models.
  • Experience in using existing solvers. Highly desired is experience in creating customized optimization algorithms.
  • ‘Small data’ experience: demonstrated ability to develop and implement creative approaches for making optimization algorithms perform with imperfect, noisy data.
  • Experience with reinforcement learning is a plus.
