Support Engineer - Internship (80-100%)

Currently, the Carbyon team consists of 44 individuals (coming from 11 different countries!). High over, you could say that there’s two main teams, the team working on the sorbent (the material that adsorbs the carbon dioxide) as well as the machine development team (which creates the machine to ultimately adsorb and thus capture the carbon dioxide). Within the machine development team we have different competencies (varying from Mechanical to Electrical Engineering and from Control Engineering to Thermal). Also, and that’s where you’ll sit, there’s the Software Team. This team currently consists of 5 people (2 architects and 3 software engineers). Essentially, the software team collectively delivers support and analysis software for an ever-growing team of scientists. Looking at the software team, you could say that they have strong affinity with cloud development, data analysis and embedded software. However, currently, Front-End Development is a skill that is not very present in the team. And guess what, that’s where you come into play! We have a challenging assignment focused on building an intuitive Front-End for Model Simulation Environment. Huh, what?! Let’s give some more details here; At Carbyon, we are constantly trying to push the boundaries of our machines. A key method of doing so is by developing model simulations of carbon capture machines to be. The model simulations are executed in an environment developed in-house and are Python-based. This simulation environment is currently in use by Carbyon and requires a user-friendly, well-developed front-end for easier interaction, data retrieval and machine building. During your internship, you’ll turn our command line-based modelling tool into an intuitive, fast web-based interface. This website should only be accessible for people with a Carbyon account. There should be various roles a logged-in user can have, including developer, simulation engineer and user. The users should be able to view the machines, but also run, adapt and interpret them. THE PROJECTThe goal of this internship is to develop a model for Techno-Economic Assessment on Direct Air Capture technology as developed by <a href="https://www.skytree.eu/">Skytree</a>, and to integrate the results into an existing Life Cycle Assessment structure. Skytree builds technology for the Direct Air Capture (DAC) of CO2 that is needed to combat climate change. As part of that technology, we design, develop, and build filters and products for CO2 capture. In order to verify negative environmental footprints of all our operations and products, we perform in-house Life Cycle Assessment (LCAs). The economic counterpart of LCA, Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) provides vital information on the economics associated with a technology under development. Research shows that 70-80% of a new product emissions and costs are determined during the design state. Performing TEA in combination with LCA enables the simultaneous analysis of a technology on environmental and economical aspects. This comprehensive approach allows for finding hotspots for improving the technology on both aspects.Similarly to LCA, a TEA consists of four steps: goal and scope determination, inventory data collection, result calculation and interpretation. Additionally, TEA can be integrated into the LCA, or the results of both analyses can be compared after separate analysis. We are hiring an electrical engineer who will report directly to the CEO. You will be responsible for low-voltage systems and developing controls and automation for direct air capture systems and associated test systems. Control engineers develop and integrate physical hardware including data acquisition systems, various sensors, PLCs, wire harnesses, and PCBs. You should be familiar with sensors, data acquisition (DAQ) systems, actuators, PLCs, and more.
You will oversee all aspects of your projects, including initial requirements gathering, feasibility studies, full system design, purchasing and procurement, finances, scheduling, manufacturing, contractor management, installation, and activation.
