Eligibility to work in the U.S. is required for the duration of the fellowship. Term  This is a 2-year fellowship with an anticipated start date between July 1 and September 1, 2024.  Overall Function  The Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellow will develop a model to evaluate the food and nutrition provisioning implications of prospective commercial fisheries targeting mesopelagic (midwater) marine fishes and zooplankton for use in aquaculture feeds (e.g., fishmeal), and conduct a trade-off analysis of climate mitigation and food production goals from such fisheries. Specifically, the fellow will calculate the fishmeal production potential from fisheries in 1-2 geographies (potentially the California Current, Humboldt Current, and/or the North Atlantic), and calculate the potential protein and micronutrient yield of aquaculture species portfolios reflecting different management goals (e.g., maximize protein, maximize specific nutrients, maximize profit). This analysis would be integrated with ongoing modeling of the carbon sequestration potential of mesopelagic species, to enable a trade-off analysis. The fellow will determine the optimum level of harvest of mesopelagic species in each geography that could support food security provisioning and minimize disruption of carbon sequestration. This model and trade-off analysis will be developed into one or more academic journal articles, as well as policy briefs and communication materials to share with national and international fishery management bodies, industry representatives, and climate leaders.  The fellow will work with Dr. Julia Mason, Social-ecological Systems Scientist and Dr. Mattias Cape, Marine Biogeochemical Scientist at EDF, and Dr. Eugene Won, a fish biologist and aquaculture specialist at Cornell University. The fellow will be part of a cohort of postdoctoral and research fellows at EDF, and will collaborate closely with research partners at Cornell University as well as other research institutions. We work to advance the scientific understanding of agricultural systems, and to translate the science into action through implementation of the most effective and credible climate solutions. Overall Function The Fellow will be closely engaged with the work of Cornell’s School of Integrative Plant Sciences’ Soil &amp; Crop Sciences Section, will participate in the joint EDF-Cornell Sustainability Leadership Program, join a thriving community of scientists across EDF, and participate in ongoing meetings with program and policy staff across the organization. The Fellow will be part of a collaborative team that spans multiple universities (Yale School of the Environment, Cornell School of Integrative Plant Science) and organizations (Hudson Carbon and Woodwell Climate Research Center), and will report directly to the co-P.I.’s (Drs. Emily Oldfield and Jocelyn Lavallee at EDF and Dr. Louis Longchamps at Cornell). This collaborative team is implementing a research project focusing on regional and field scale sampling designs for soil carbon sequestration in the Hudson Valley of New York State. The Fellow will couple high density soil carbon stock data with other data products related to soil series, topography, management, landscape and environmental covariates (e.g., soil survey data, remote sensing data products) to explore questions related to soil sampling designs, landscape stratification and data optimization for digital soil mapping in a regional agroecosystem. The Climate/Energy Education Fellow is supported through an innovative partnership between Centralia College, Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI), and TransAlta; with funds provided by Centralia Coal Transition Grants. Aimed at addressing Washington state&rsquo;s myriad of energy and environmental sustainability initiatives, this Fellowship model presents a distinct opportunity to increase clean energy and career knowledge, and shape energy efficiencies and sustainability practices.
At the core of this program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address clean energy and sustainability within education. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics, and community development. In addition to the Climate Corps training, this position offers professional development opportunities designed to help provide the range of skills necessary to execute sustainable programs or practices.
The candidate will work on pressing climate and sustainability problems and be relied upon to work toward replicable solutions. A customized mix of on-the-job training, fieldwork, and class time will help the Fellow hone marketable skills and draw important professional connections while making a marked difference in the K-12 community.
<h2>Position Description</h2>
The Climate/Energy Education Fellow will support PNCECE hosted at Centralia College and collaborate with wide-ranging project partners in Lewis and south Thurston counties to support sustainability workforce development pathways that, 1) educate, promote, and facilitate energy initiatives in K-12 programs, 2) facilitate higher education faculty engagement with topics such as building efficiency standards policy, environmental science, clean energy, HVAC and more, through communities of practice, and 3) provide internship opportunities to residents, and high school and college students 18 years of age and older. This innovative programming supported by SEI and the Climate/Energy Education Fellow is designed to create a skilled workforce that will be employable through high-wage clean energy and energy efficiency job opportunities in the region and state.
The Fellow will be supported by SEI, a regional supervisor, and the director of the Pacific NW Center of Excellence for Clean Energy.
<h2>Responsibilities</h2>
<ul>
<li>Assist the Center of Excellence and local stakeholders in organizing the summer FWEE/STEM program (week of June 24).</li>
<li>Promote training opportunities and resources for high school teachers and recruit participation in the program (Lewis and South Thurston counties).</li>
<li>Assist with recruiting college faculty into the Energy Community of Practice and support program logistics (administrative tasks)</li>
<li>Promote the renewable energy classes in Centralia HS and WF West (on campuses)</li>
<li>Promote careers in energy at outreach events (such as the Lewis County Fair with LC PUD)</li>
<li>In coordination with SEI staff and local high schools; create, launch, and facilitate an energy conservation competition plan between two schools.</li>
<li>Identify partners and site supervisors, such as at Centralia College and Centralia College East, to host two internship opportunities (SEI is the liaison for those interns)</li>

COMPENSATION
ELI provides clerks an hourly wage of $25. In order to participate in the paid law clerk program, you must be physically present in the DC metro area (where ELI&rsquo;s office is located) during the clerkship. If a clerk desires to receive course credit for the clerkship and the clerk&rsquo;s school prohibits earning income for the same work as the course credit is being received, accommodations can be made. Clerkships during the academic year run approximately 12 weeks, and clerks work part-time (approximately 12 hours per week).

For five decades, the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, policy, and management, both domestically and internationally.
ELI is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Director to lead our Network for the Digital Economy and the Environment (nDEE) program, which aims to understand and address the environmental impact of the digital economy. The Program Director will be responsible for designing and executing projects that explore the intersections between technology, the digital economy, and the environment and for informing actionable policy to mitigate the direct and indirect negative impacts of digital technologies on the planet.
Please note that this is a 1-year position to begin, with possibility of renewal depending on project outcomes.
ABOUT NDEE
The Network on the Digital Economy and the Environment (nDEE) is a collaboration of the Environmental Law Institute, Yale University, and the University of California at Berkeley. The nDEE&rsquo;s mission is to catalyze and disseminate research on the energy and environmental impacts of the digital economy. These three institutions provide the initiative with a national presence and expertise in environmental assessment, management, policy, and law.
The nDEE&rsquo;s activities also include research development, grantmaking, and publishing and are jointly funded by the Internet Society Foundation (ISOC) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The nDEE also manages a Research Coordination Network (RCN) through additional funding from the National Science Foundation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
<ul>
<li>Develop and execute a research-to-action agenda that explores the environmental impact of the digital economy, with a focus on use-inspired research that can lead to actionable policies, more sustainable business practices, or environmentally beneficial consumer choices or behaviors.</li>
<li>Lead a team of program staff and provide guidance and support as needed to ensure high-quality work and timely completion of deliverables.</li>
<li>Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the digital technology and environmental fields, including funders, researchers, companies, industry groups, non-governmental organizations, and policy makers, to advance the program's mission and goals.</li>
<li>Engage with academic, policy, and advocacy communities to stay informed about developments in relevant fields and promote the organization's research and advocacy efforts.</li>
<li>Incentivize engagement across the science-policy gap of these research topics, building researcher and user communications and translation skills, facilitating more networking and professional partnerships, and expanding outreach activities at both research and policy-making institutions.</li>
<li>Write reports, policy briefs, and other documents that communicate research findings and recommendations to various audiences, including policy makers, industry leaders, and the general public.</li>
<li>Represent the program and ELI more broadly at conferences, meetings, and other public events, presenting research findings and participating in panels and discussions.</li>
<li>Connect programmatic learnings and deliverables to ELI's work, facilitating and encouraging cross-pollination with the institution more broadly.</li>
<li>Support fundraising efforts for the nDEE program by leveraging existing relationships with foundations and cultivating new partnerships. Specifically, targeting grants and donations to support research initiatives, with a particular emphasis on advancing the mission of environmental protection within the digital economy landscape.</li>
<li>Build trust across organizational boundaries.</li>
</ul>
QUALIFICATIONS
<ul>
<li>10+ years of policy experience working on environmental or sustainability issues, preferably with a focus on digital technology.</li>
<li>A Master&rsquo;s or Ph.D. or equivalent training and expertise in a relevant field, such as environmental studies, economics, computer science, engineering or public policy.</li>
<li>Familiarity with the political and policy making landscape in Washington, DC.</li>
<li>Substantive knowledge of the positive and negative impacts that digital technology and the digital economy have on the environment.</li>
<li>Proven experience raising funds and connecting with foundations and other potential funders.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to manage a team of researchers and program staff, and to work collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders.</li>
<li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex ideas to non-expert audiences.</li>
<li>Strong commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.</li>
<li>Ability to become proficient in new issue areas and contribute to creative, rigorous, analytical approaches to address them.</li>
<li>Well-developed collaborative and interpersonal skills.</li>
<li>Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.</li>
<li>Well-developed judgment to assess needs, develop strategy, establish priorities, and effectively manage multiple tasks at the same time with moderate supervision.</li>

Program Director, Digital Economy and the Environment

Summary This position is part of the Office of the Chief Human Capital Officer, Department of Energy. As a Human Resources Specialist (Human Resource Development), you will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to management concerning determination of training needs, sources of needed training, planning to meet identified needs, assisting in providing consulting services, assisting in managing the training program, and evaluation of results. Responsibilities As a Human Resources Specialist (Human Resource Development), you will: Develop and refine instructional methods, course materials, training aids, and improved applications of educational technology for use by education specialists, instructors, managers/supervisors, and employees. Validate local training requirements and budget considerations, working with other offices, to estimate the training budget. Schedule, conduct, and distribute training announcements.
