<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">To prevent the worst impacts of climate change, the world needs to reach net zero around mid century. This means two things: slash global emissions from 60 gigaton annual to near zero, and remove CO2 from the atmosphere on a multi gigaton scale.</span></p>
</div>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">The last IPCC report estimates that 5 to 16 gigaton of CDR will be required each year after 2050 to keep global temperature increase as close to 1.5&deg;C as possible. Reaching such levels in just a few decades is a herculean feat and will require many approaches.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Direct Air Capture is compelling due to is low physical footprint, flexible siting near CO2 storage and clean energy, and straightforward measurement. On the demand side, DAC benefits from massive tailwinds, such as a $3.5 billion scale up funding in the US, a first billion $ acquisition, and a fast growing market for CDR credits and carbon negative products (e.g. concrete).</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">However, first generation DAC technologies are very energy intensive due to the work required to separate CO2 from the sorbent. Current systems use 1,500 to 3,000 kWh per ton of CO2 - which is 10x to 20x higher than the theoretical minimum. At gigaton scale, such systems would require between 1/3 and 3/4 of the annual US power consumption.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">We are developing a breakthrough process which tackles this problem, the most important to solve for gigaton scale DAC to become a reality.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Achieving net zero requires a deployment of clean energy technologies at a speed and scale which has no historical precedent. In the transition from fossil fuels to a highly electrified system based on durable metals, the supply of critical minerals is an acute bottleneck.</span></p>
</div>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">The supply gap is most acute for copper, the backbone of clean electricity across power grids, solar, wind, electric vehicles, and more. These will double copper demand within two decades, reaching 40 million tons /year by 2030 and 57 million tons /year by 2050.</span></p>
</div>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Bridging that gap will be notoriously hard. Ore grades now typically contain 10 times less copper today than before 2000. Mining and refining activities are geographically concentrated. Lead times for new mines can reach 20 years. Local environmental impacts should be minimised, especially across waste, pollution and water stress.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Achieving net zero by mid century will require a deployment of clean energy technologies at a speed and scale which has no historical precedent, to shift from consumable fossil fuels to a highly electrified system based on durable metals. </span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">The supply of critical minerals is one of the most acute bottlenecks for the energy transition. Although the world holds more than enough resources, current supply pipelines cannot meet the rapidly growing demand for batteries, renewables and the power grid. </span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">This gap is particularly acute for copper, lithium, graphite, and rare earth elements, with demand surges of 1.5-6x by 2030. Nickel and cobalt will also face tensions but evolutions in battery chemistries may help alleviate them.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Compounding these challenges are declining ore grades, long lead times for new mines (up to 20 years), and geographical concentration of mining and refining. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">WattCarbon is hiring a Backend Engineer to build out the marketplace features and data ingestion pipeline for our energy decarbonization platform.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><strong>What We Want from You</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As an early hire, this is an opportunity to be creative and have a big impact on the design of our Python-based marketplace application and data pipeline/ETL stack.</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You should be able to build scalable data integrations and ETL pipelines - we will be ingesting data from dozens of suppliers and electricity meter data from hundreds of thousands of meters.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You will be tasked with ingesting diverse datasets (such as weather data and modeled buildings dataset data) for the purposes of downstream modeling.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You should think of how the customer will want to use our site and its APIs.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You write readable code that makes it easy for other engineers to integrate into broader systems.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You will need to interact with clients to work out specific data intake requirements (especially at first), while working towards building pipelines that can be eventually executed by non-engineers.</span></li>

We are open to any applicant who lives in the US - you should be comfortable working in a fully distributed, remote-first company. Our team lives in several different cities (and one RV). <p><strong>What You'll Do<br /></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As an early hire, this is an opportunity to be creative and have a big impact on the design and architecture of our web application.&nbsp;</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You should have a deep understanding of the browser platform and common technologies. We use Vue 3, Typescript, and Tailwind.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You have experience architecting frontend applications for robustness, maintainability, and performance.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You will represent front end development on cross functional teams so you should be comfortable working with our business teams to shape product development.</span></li>
