Some of these challenges include the rapid increase in the quantity and diversity of connected devices, loss of exclusive ownership of utility OT and IT systems necessary for grid monitoring and control, supply chain impacts to grid edge device security, and securing legacy system components. Researchers in NREL’s Cybersecurity Center work to address these challenges by leading cutting-edge, impactful cybersecurity research that enables scalable and quantifiable risk reduction for the energy transformation, including foundational and applied sciences to minimize service disruptions of cyberattacks on modern energy systems, alone or in combination with physical attacks. NREL’s cybersecurity research is distributed across four primary focus areas: Verifiable Cybersecurity Analysis, Secure Distributed Edge, Cybersecurity Risk Optimization, and Cyber Resilience Science. This research portfolio ranges from fundamentals of cyber-resilient system design – such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), formal methods, autonomous systems, and advanced data analytics – to applied research for analyzing and addressing cyber risk – such as cyber risk quantification, verification and validation, cloud security, grid edge security, software supply chain, and edge device security. NREL works directly with the electric utility sector, the renewable energy sector, energy and security technology vendors and integrators, the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and other federal agencies with missions critical to the Nation’s energy security interests.</p><p>The Chief Cybersecurity Engineer will provide vision, leadership, technical guidance, mentorship, and stewardship of capabilities for cybersecurity programs within NREL’s Cybersecurity Research Center. This position will report to the Director of the Cybersecurity Research Center, with specific duties of this position including, but not limited to:</p><ul><li><p>Assist in the implementation of NREL’s 5-year cybersecurity strategic plan focusing on work in foundational and applied sciences supporting the cybersecurity of complex energy systems. The new group will be part of a larger team of excellence in electrochemical conversion technology research at NREL that spans multiple Centers and Directorates.</p><p>The electrochemical conversions team at NREL conducts research in:</p><p>· Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization</p><p>· Electrochemical CO2/CO, and N2 conversion to fuels and chemicals</p><p>· Direct air capture and utilization of CO2</p><p>The interests of the groups range from fundamental R&amp;D to device testing to modelling megawatt-scale deployment of new technologies – all with a focus on translational research in partnership with private industry.</p><p>Our Chemistry and Nanoscience Center utilizes multiple research methods including wet-chemical synthesis, electrochemical and photo-electrochemical characterization, and large-scale electrolysis while making extensive use of fundamental materials characterization tools that are available at NREL and at National Lab User Facilities.</p><p>Our team provides national and international leadership in electrochemical conversion and storage through leadership in consortiums such as Hydrogen from Next-Generation Electrolyzers</p><p>of Water (H2NEW), HydroGEN, the Hydrogen Materials Advanced Research Consortium (HyMARC), the Silicon Consortium Project, and Behind the Meter Storage (BTMS). We also provide leadership in national hubs such as the Liquid Sunlight Alliance (LiSA), the Sunlight Energy Innovation Hub, and the ReCELL battery recycling consortium.</p><p>The successful candidate will work closely with the Chemistry and Nanoscience Center, the Materials Science Center, the Computational Sciences Center and the leadership and researchers from the Materials and Chemical Sciences (MCCS) and Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Sciences (MTES) directorates while utilizing the lab’s program interface to DOE programs such as the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Office, the Bioenergy Technology Office, and the Vehicles Technology Office, to identify and develop new capabilities and steward existing infrastructure.</p><p>The group manager will serve as a key contributor to the broader NREL S&amp;T strategy through strategic interactions throughout the Directorate and with other Directorates at NREL.
