Eligibility to work in the U.S. is required for the duration of the fellowship. Term  This is a 2-year fellowship with an anticipated start date between July 1 and September 1, 2024.  Overall Function  The Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellow will develop a model to evaluate the food and nutrition provisioning implications of prospective commercial fisheries targeting mesopelagic (midwater) marine fishes and zooplankton for use in aquaculture feeds (e.g., fishmeal), and conduct a trade-off analysis of climate mitigation and food production goals from such fisheries. Specifically, the fellow will calculate the fishmeal production potential from fisheries in 1-2 geographies (potentially the California Current, Humboldt Current, and/or the North Atlantic), and calculate the potential protein and micronutrient yield of aquaculture species portfolios reflecting different management goals (e.g., maximize protein, maximize specific nutrients, maximize profit). This analysis would be integrated with ongoing modeling of the carbon sequestration potential of mesopelagic species, to enable a trade-off analysis. The fellow will determine the optimum level of harvest of mesopelagic species in each geography that could support food security provisioning and minimize disruption of carbon sequestration. This model and trade-off analysis will be developed into one or more academic journal articles, as well as policy briefs and communication materials to share with national and international fishery management bodies, industry representatives, and climate leaders.  The fellow will work with Dr. Julia Mason, Social-ecological Systems Scientist and Dr. Mattias Cape, Marine Biogeochemical Scientist at EDF, and Dr. Eugene Won, a fish biologist and aquaculture specialist at Cornell University. The fellow will be part of a cohort of postdoctoral and research fellows at EDF, and will collaborate closely with research partners at Cornell University as well as other research institutions. The team is responsible for developing the company’s data services and as a front-end software engineer you will play a crucial role in developing our user interface for data visualization. You will work closely with physicists and other software engineers to create user-friendly, responsive, and visually appealing web applications and interfaces that showcase our groundbreaking work in the field of fusion energy.</div> <h3>This team member will:</h3><ul><li>Collaborate with back-end software engineers to implement responsive and intuitive web-based user interfaces for data visualization</li><li>Write clean, maintainable and efficient code using modern web technologies including HTML 5, CSS, JavaScript and front-end frameworks such as React</li><li>Ensure that web applications provide an exceptional user experience, with a focus on usability and accessibility</li><li>Optimize front-end performance to deliver fast-loading and smooth user experiences, considering factors like page load times and responsiveness</li><li>Collaborate with physicists, diagnosticians, and other engineers to gather user stories and translate the resulting requirements into code</li></ul><h3>The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:</h3><ul><li>Engineering degree in a related field such as computer science, computer engineering, etc. and a minimum of 5 years of experience</li><li>Proven experience as a front-end software engineer, with a strong portfolio showcasing your web development projects</li><li>Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and front-end libraries or frameworks</li><li>Familiarity with Linux and development tools such as Git, GitHub, and Docker</li><li>Experience with responsive design and front-end optimization</li><li>Knowledge of UI/UX design principles and best practices</li><li>Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail</li><li>Excellent communication and teamwork skills</li><li>Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative environment</li></ul><h3>Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:</h3><ul><li>Experience in developing software for mission-critical applications</li><li>Experience with data visualization libraries such as D3.js or Plotly</li><li>A passion for clean energy and sustainability</li><li>Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs</li><li>Perform activities such as typing for extended periods of time</li><li>Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally</li><li>#LI-Onsite</li></ul> <div>CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits.
