<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">At its heart, your work will about supporting technical diligence and analysis of new venture creation opportunities, and to help us source future Founders in Residence. Your day-to-day activities will vary but mostly fall into five main pillars:</span></p>

You will track the most relevant people, labs and ecosystems.</span></li>
<li id="block-83ddfc6f39fc457d9a87faab9d92fed6" class="notion-list-item"><span class="notion-semantic-string"><strong>Diligence.</strong> You will support the team in the technical diligence of projects in our pipeline. This involves internal worksessions, expert calls, reviews of scientific literature, techno-economic analysis, environmental assessment, etc.</span></li>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Biological carbon fixation pulls 100s of Gt C from the atmosphere every year, as plants, algae, bacteria, archaea, and other organisms form biomass through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. Nature-based solutions harness this superpower but cannot deliver the scale of permanent carbon removal that the world needs.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">We believe there are several white spaces to engineer biology for large-scale CDR, taking advantage of a cambrian explosion in synthetic biology tools and methods. We are exploring opportunities across two broad categories.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Mineralisation occurs when certain rocks are exposed to CO2, which binds with calcium, magnesium or other elements to form carbonate minerals. This phenomenon naturally removes 1.1 gigaton of CO2 per year and could be enhanced to multi-gigaton scale by 2050. Mineralisation has three unique advantages: chemical reactions require no energy input, the reactive minerals are in almost unlimited supply, and sequestration into rocks ensure maximum permanence. However, the reaction rate is very slow, the distribution of optimal resources is poorly understood, and certain methods face other challenges across water use, safety, logistics scaleup, and carbon uptake measurement.</span></p>

Although it remains only 10 years in the atmosphere, its warming impact is 85x as high as CO2 on a 20-year time scale. Overall, it accounts for a third of the global temperature increase since the industrial revolution.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Rapid methane abatement is the biggest opportunity to mitigate near-term warming and prevent the triggering of dangerous climate tipping points. </span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Enteric fermentation alone accounts from 30% of anthropogenic methane and 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. This digestive process occurs in the rumen, the stomach of ruminant animals (cattle, sheep, goats).</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Various mitigation strategies have been proposed. Feed additives like 3NOP, bromoform, and seaweed can partially tackle enteric methane in feedlots, about 10% of cattle population. Capture systems could be a useful yet marginal solution. Methanogen vaccines would be transformative, but commensal microbes are proving insanely hard to deactivate. </span></p>

Across heavy industry and transportation, clean molecules will be required as low-carbon fuels or chemical feedstocks where direct electrification cannot do the job. </span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">These molecules include H2 itself but also its conversion into other H carriers like methanol, ammonia, and synthetic hydrocarbons. While today 96% of H2 production relies on fossils, huge investments are being made into clean H2 production, from water electrolysis to other approaches like CCS and methane pyrolysis.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">To prevent the worst impacts of climate change, the world needs to reach net zero around mid century. This means two things: slash global emissions from 60 gigaton annual to near zero, and remove CO2 from the atmosphere on a multi gigaton scale.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">The last IPCC report estimates that 5 to 16 gigaton of CDR will be required each year after 2050 to keep global temperature increase as close to 1.5&deg;C as possible. Reaching such levels in just a few decades is a herculean feat and will require many approaches.</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">Direct Air Capture is compelling due to is low physical footprint, flexible siting near CO2 storage and clean energy, and straightforward measurement. On the demand side, DAC benefits from massive tailwinds, such as a $3.5 billion scale up funding in the US, a first billion $ acquisition, and a fast growing market for CDR credits and carbon negative products (e.g. concrete).</span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">However, first generation DAC technologies are very energy intensive due to the work required to separate CO2 from the sorbent. Current systems use 1,500 to 3,000 kWh per ton of CO2 - which is 10x to 20x higher than the theoretical minimum. At gigaton scale, such systems would require between 1/3 and 3/4 of the annual US power consumption.</span></p>

Offshore wind and marine power could provide 20 times the global electricity demand, and are expected to grow 50-100x by 2050. Marine carbon removal (mCDR) is one of few CDR approaches that could reach the multi gigaton scale required for net zero. Marine genomics and metagenomics could unlock tremendous value for bio-based materials and biotechnology.</span></p>

However, while the oceans cover 70% of the Earth&rsquo;s surface, only 5% have been thoroughly explored to date. This is in part due to cost, difficulty and limit of operation of current marine data collection systems. As a result, many parts of the worlds&rsquo; ocean that are potential sites for climate solutions lack necessary and crucial baseline data to make informed decisions and create the best approaches. </span></p>

<p class="notion-text__content"><span class="notion-semantic-string">We are developing a breakthrough ocean data intelligence solution to provide scalable baseline data collection for critical marine industries &mdash; fisheries and aquaculture, marine renewable energy, biodiversity and marine genetic resources, marine protected areas (MPAs) assessment, and MRV (measurement, reporting, verification) for marine CDR.</span></p>

Key commercial and technical concepts have been de-risked, but there is a lot of room for technical creativity: we are super early!</span></li>

You will work closely with the CEO &amp; scientific advisors to de-risk key technical aspects of the project and develop a scalable technology platform that can be deployed across multiple sites. This process will be complemented by customer acquisition &amp; marine robotics background of the CEO, the scientific expertise of our close advisors, &amp; key first technical hires.</span></li>
