Livelihoods and Education Consultant
Bina, Madhya Pradesh, India
My journey in the social sector started during my college days at BITS Pilani in Pilani city of Rajasthan. I was leading a rural women livelihoods project and was able to generate a sustainable income of more than Rs4000/month for close to 40 women, over a span of 4 years. Apart from this, I also lead 15 membered college’s mess committee which employed 180+ skilled workers and unskilled workers and had turnover of INR 12 crore. This experience helped me in developing expertise in areas such as social leadership, grassroot level community engagement, workforce management and organization level policy designing. Post college, I worked as a market research analyst in Food and Beverages division at a market research firm. My primary and secondary research work in forecasting market trends, gave me a deep insight into global food economy and sustainable practices adopted by various organizations. I realized the importance of sustainability in the current era of climate change, poverty and education disparity. So, I joined Teach for India fellowship with a goal to understand the use of education as a tool for community transformation. During the fellowship, I was able to increase the literacy and numeracy outcomes of around 80% students by a grade level of 2. I had a strong focus on experiential learning. Therefore, I took the students to more than 50 exposure trips related to heritage, nature, art & culture, and climate change during my 2 years fellowship. This initiative not only enhanced the academic outcome of the students but also motivated them to take up independent initiatives in the area of climate change and community awareness. Moreover, many dignitaries as reputed as Diplomat of Britain got connected with the school. I along with my co-fellow also started an evening learning center, where low order primary students were taught by the secondary students. The evening learning center provided these students a non-judgmental independent space to learn and implement their learnings. I also mentored overseas students from Global Citizen Year, Minerva School and local students from a reputed women college in the area of social leadership and community engagement. During the fellowship, I got the opportunity to train 20 teachers at a tribal school, run by an IIT graduate in Majuli island, Assam in the area of pedagogy and classroom management. My willingness to implement learnings in the domain of skill development and education sector had motivated me to work in developing livelihoods for marginalized community. I had joined Access Livelihood Consulting in Hyderabad, post my Teach for India fellowship. The organization’s vision is to generate rural women entrepreneurs and impart skills to help them in establishing their own sustainable enterprises. During my tenure at the organization, I had supervised the skill development program for tribal women in Gondia district of Maharashtra. Moreover, I also lead the team which was tasked to design a social incubator for rural entrepreneurs.
All these experiences nurtured me to develop strong skillsets in the domain of education, livelihoods, consultancy, climate change awareness and market research.Â
