Law School Student, Sustainability Consultant
Las Vegas, NV, USA
My early interests in life were sports statistics and anything that had to do with the legal field. At the young age of 51, I am currently working towards having a legal profession by attending the University of Arizona Law School. As a political science major at UNLV, I followed my heart by taking pre-law classes and becoming active in student government. I quickly started to enjoy making a difference for the benefit of others. I served in various elected and appointed positions in student government during my undergraduate studies. I created and wrote the by-laws for the student campus safety committee, which is still active today. During my last full semester of college, I attended the first massage therapy school to open in Las Vegas. Having worked in health spas to help pay my way through college, I developed a love of massage therapy as an art and decided to take some time off from my studies and get my massage license. With my bachelor's degree and massage therapy license in hand, I started a massage therapy business. Professional Massage Therapy was the first company to provide chair massage in the Las Vegas hotel swimming pools' vicinity. I also became politically active in a highly contested public hearing on the massage laws at the time. I successfully lobbied to create an independent contractor's license for a massage therapist. My new passion for lobbying and influencing public policy was born. Early signs of repetitive stress injuries, plus my love for sports, led to a new career as a co-host on the legendary Stardust Line Sports Radio Show. Consequently, I became the host of a Fox Sports Radio Show. Simultaneously, I started a sports marketing company that provided marketing plans, purchased advertising for clients, and produced a high school basketball television show. Fascinated with the budding solar industry, I took a job as a residential solar consultant after my radio show came to an end. Going all in and learning everything I could about the solar industry, I quickly realized that Nevada was ten plus years behind California and Colorado, especially in social and environmental policy. In 2015, Nevada Energy, the local utility company, discontinued net-metering for residential customers. Without net metering, residential solar became obsolete. Out of a job, I volunteered for Nevada's Solar Owners Association and was responsible for testifying and lobbying in support of Nevada solar customers that had installed systems. I attended and testified in PUC hearings fighting to bring back net metering and protect consumers' solar rights. Due to public outcry and the passionate activists that I worked with, net metering was re-established. My participation in the legislative process to bring back solar was rewarding. After lobbying the legislature, I established and currently operate NetZero Brokers, a renewable energy consultancy. As a consultant, I specialize in LED lighting for small business clients, sell solar, and provide financing. My passion for influencing public policy, helping others, and getting my master's in legal studies makes your internship a perfect fit for me. Currently, as an unpaid lobbyist, I look forward to participating in the Nevada state legislature's 2021 session to support a bill that makes low-income community solar a reality.
