Graduate Student/Recycling Intern with Tufts University Office of Sustainability
Medford, MA, USA
I graduated from Westfield State University (Westfield, MA) in May 2020 with a B.A/B.S in Economics and Environmental Science, a minor in Spanish, and the distinction of being class valedictorian. Now, I am in pursuit of a M.S in Sustainability from Tufts University. I hope to be able to seek opportunities to gain experience in potential long-term positions, as I will be looking for a full-time position in fall 2021. As a M.S Sustainability candidate, I am interested in working with organizations who focus on ensuring the longevity of both the built and natural environment and their successful coexistence. Relevant classes I took at Westfield include: Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Conservation & Management, Business & Technical Writing, Introduction/Advanced GIS, Ecological Restoration, and Sustainable Development for the Tropics (a 4-week study abroad course in Costa Rica). I was also a student athlete, and an active club member and leader of various groups. These positions required me to further balance and prioritize the workload of leadership while maintaining stellar academics. I also completed my Commonwealth Senior Honors Thesis research; this experience involved a prolonged period of stay in Costa Rica collecting data on consumer attitude towards sustainable certifications and green practices. While I have only completed one semester at Tufts, my coursework there has been equally influential, particularly Advanced Geospatial Reasoning and Water Resources Policy & Watershed Management. Meeting deadlines, being detail-oriented, having great communication and presentation skills, and keeping close track of my responsibilities have been essential skills. In recent years, I have been involved in numerous professional initiatives as well. During my time at Second Generation Energy (SGE) Solar, I gained experience with Microsoft Office programs and customer relationship management (CRM) database software such as HighRise and SunBase. During summer 2020, I was employed as a Park Ranger at Buffumville Dam in Charlton, MA; the job fulfilled my love of being outdoors, and kept me active with various landscaping and construction tasks. Though interaction with the public was minimal in comparison to a typical year, I enjoyed the instances where I educated visitors on the dam and surrounding area. Finally, at Tufts I am the Recycling Intern with Tufts’ Office of Sustainability, where I have learned a lot about recycling and waste reduction. In this position I have coordinated logistics of utilizing the reuse economy safely during COVID-19, helped to implement new waste diversion streams such as an extended lab recycling initiative, and managed projects and communication effectively with Slack and Asana. As a graduate student experienced in juggling tasks and with a desire to promote sustainable practices, I can bring to your institution my strengths- dedication, effective and friendly communication, organization, leadership, and a positive attitude. I have many of the skills necessary to work in sustainability/environmental fields; my specific interests lie in renewable energy, hydrology, and waste reduction but I am open to all opportunities.
